Basketball Teams Compete in Sagebrush Classic
Boys 5th - Girls 4th - Kinen Wins FT Contest
On Tuesday, December 3rd, the high school varsity basketball teams played in the opening round of the Brewster Sagebrush Classic. The girls team earned a 48-25 victory over the Golden Plains girls, while the boys lost a close battle to the Golden Plain Bulldogs 49-54.
In the girls game, St. Francis led at the end of all four quarters. Scoring was slow early for both teams, but the Lady Indians lead 6-4 at the end of the first quarter. The girls began turning up the defensive pressure in the second quarter and forced Golden Plains into several miscues resulting in baskets for St. Francis. The Lady Indians led at halftime, 21-8. Golden Plains continued to have difficulty handling the pressure applied by the Lady Indians in the second half. Saint Francis led 39-14 at the end of three, and won easily 48-25. Andrea Holzwarth led the scoring for St. Francis with 11 points. Sidnee Crabtree scored 10 and Jami Pevler 6.
The boys game was very competitive. Golden Plains led at each quarter break--12-16; 21-33; 30-40; and 49-54. The Bulldogs moved the ball well and got good shots against the St. Francis zone defense early and jumped out to a lead. After trailing 30-40 at the end of three quarters, St. Francis battled hard and evened the score at 42-42 with 5:17 remaining following a trey by Matt Raile and free throw by Ted Crabtree. The Indians tried valiantly but they could not take the lead. The point spread was within three points until the Bulldogs sealed the win with four straight free throws near the end of the game. The Indians were led in scoring by Ted Crabtree with 20, Matt Raile with 15, and Trent Kinen with 8 points. Tate Bruggemen (6'4" Jr) led the Bulldogs with 23 points.
Scores of the other games on Tuesday follow. In girls action: Stratton 48 - Brewster 41; Idalia 78 - Triplains 57; Rawlins County 59 - Cheylin 32. In boys action: Brewster 68 - Stratton 41; Idalia - 51 - Triplains 40; Rawlins County 76 - Cheylin 48.
In Friday's action, the St. Francis boys defeated Cheylin 70-49. Cheylin played well in the first half while the Indians got off to a sluggish start. Cheylin lead throughout the first quarter (12-14) and extended their lead to 6 in the second quarter. The Cougars held on to lead at halftime (25-26). The second half was all St. Francis. The Indians play much better defense and scored often inside to lead at the 3rd quarter break 45-31. Final score: Indians 70 - Cougars 49. The Indians were led in scoring by Ted Crabtree with 20 points. Matt Raile contributed 17, Sam Sowers 9, and Trent Kinen 7. Lincoln Pochop led the Cougars with 19
In Friday evening's girls game, the Lady Indians played very hard giving the Lady Buffs from Rawlins County all they wanted early. Rawlins County jumped out to an early 6-11 lead in the first quarter, but the Lady Indians increased their defensive pressure and force numerous turnovers in the second quarter to narrow the gap to 23-26 by halftime. Rawlins County executed much better in the second half and increased the lead to 34-46 by the 3rd quarter break. The Lady Indians competed well, but lost 43-63. Sidnee Crabtree led the Lady Indians in scoring with 21 points. Joni Pevler and Jodi Hilt each scored eight. Miller (16), Carlson (12) and Rall (12) provided balanced scoring for the Lady Buffs.
The games scheduled for December 8th were rescheduled due to weather conditions and were finally played on December 15th. The girls played Idalia, CO in the third place game. The girls hustled hard and applied some good pressure defense, but could not keep pace with the Idalia girls. The Lady Indians jumped out to a first quarter lead (9-5) and held on to lead 17-15 at halftime. In the second half, the Lady Wolves turned up the intensity and played very well while the Lady Indians had some difficulties with ball handling and shooting. The Idalia girls led 23-30 after three quarters of play and went on to win 29-43. Sidnee Crabtee (9) and Beth Gienger (7) led the Lady Indians in scoring. Langendoerfer led all scorers with 14.
In boys action, the Indians paired up with Triplains in the fifth place game. The game featured runs by both teams at various times throughout the game. Triplains executed well on offense early while St. Francis seemed a little sluggish. The Vikings led 4-11 at the quarter break and 20-26 at halftime. St. Francis played better in the second half and finally gained a one point lead by the end of three quarters (34-33). Playing some sound man defense in the fourth quarter caused Triplains some trouble and the Indians went on to win 52-39. Trent Kinen (20) and Ted Crabtree (15) led the Indians in scoring. Barrett had 20 for Triplains.
Trent Kinen won the boys free throw contest by making 23 (out of 25) in the opening round and 21 in the finals.
