Basketball Teams Split With Decatur County
On Friday, December 14th, the high school basketball teams traveled to Oberlin for NWKL action. The St. Francis Lady Indians trailed Decatur County throughout the evening in a game marked by great hustle and numerous turnovers by both teams. The Lady Indians also suffered some foul problems which were costly also. Scores at the first three quarter breaks were: 9-17; 13-31; and 19-46. The Lady Indians were defeated 35-59. Beth Gienger led the team in scoring with 10 points. Olson (19), Pauls (12), and Dreher (11) gave the Lady Devils balanced scoring. St. Francis won the JV girls game 30-13.
In boys action, the game was very close throughout the first half. Decatur County led at the end of the 1st quarter (13-14) but St. Francis led at halftime 26-24. In the second half, St. Francis played very well, controlling tempo, moving the ball quickly, and finding the basket often. The Indians opened the lead to 43-32 by the 3rd quarter break. Action in the 4th quarter was fast and furious. St. Francis hit several consecutive shots to extend the lead to 20 points (53-33) with five minutes remaining. Oberlin then went on a quick spurt and cut the lead to 53-42 with 3:55 to go. Final score Indians 63 - Red Devils 48. The Indians balanced attack was led by Crabtree (19), Kinen (16), Frewen (15) , and Matt Raile (9). Juenemann (19) and Fortin (14) paced the Read Devils. Decatur County won the JV game 33-34.
