Basketball Teams Compete in the Oberlin Invitational
Girls Seventh; Boys Place Fifth
The Oberlin Invitational Basketball Tournament will be held on January 15, 17, 18, and 19, 2008. Teams from Decatur County, James Irwin, Jefferson Academy, Hoxie, Oakley, Rawlins County, St. Francis, and Quinter will participate this year. Teams were seeded on Monday, January 7th according to record, scheduling, and geography. Links to the tournament brackets are found below. There will be a free throw contest again this year. All-tournament teams will be selected. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for students per day. Only DCHS passes will be honored.
Tuesday, January 15th
The Rawlins County Lady Buffaloes handed the Lady Indians a 24-61 loss in the first round of the Oberlin Invitational Basketball Tournament. Rawlins County jumped out to a 7-16 lead at the end of the first period and never looked back. The lead had increased to 12-34 at halftime. Rawlins County's superior shooting (40% for the Lady Buffs compared to 19% for the Lady Indians), ball handling skills, and rebounding (20-36) took a toll on the Lady Indians' performance. The third quarter score was 18-54 and the final score 24-61 (running clock). Sidnee Crabtree led the Lady Indians in scoring with 12. Miller (22), Carlson (17), and Wolters (10) paced the Lady Buffs.
The Indians did not far much better, facing a good Quinter team. Quinter shot the ball very well on the evening connecting on numerous threes. The first quarter score was 6-22 with the Bulldogs leading. The Indians fell behind by 23 points in the second quarter (11-34) but had cut into the lead somewhat by halftime (21-39). Quinter continued to move the ball well and connect on a good percentage of their shots in the second half stretching the lead to 30-58 at the end of three quarters of play. Final score Indians 36, Bulldogs 75. Trent Kinen led the Indians in scoring with 15 points; Ted Crabtree added 8. Quinter had balanced scoring from several players. Reed (16) Wolf (11) and Simon (10) led the Bulldogs.
The Lady Indians will now play on Friday at 3:30 PM against Jefferson Academy. Jefferson Academy was defeated by Hoxie 48-37 on Thursday evening. The Indians will play Friday at 6:30 PM against Oberlin who lost to Jefferson Academy 56-45 on Thursday. Both games will be played in the junior high gym in Oberlin.
In other games on Thursday evening, the Decatur County girls defeated James Irwin 67-23 and the Hoxie boys defeated James Irwin 50-17.
Friday, January 18th
The Lady Indians lost a close game to Jefferson Academy tonight in the semifinal round of the Oberlin Invitational. The game was very close throughout the first half with the score tied at 10 at the end of the first period. The Lady Jaguars forged a three point lead by halftime (25-28). In the third quarter the Lady Jaguars built at ten point lead (31-41) that the Lady Indians never could recover from. The Lady Indians fought hard, and closed the gap to 43-47 with 1:18 remaining. Neither team scored from that point and the Lady Indians lost the game 43-47. The Lady Indians were 3 of 11 from the free throw line in the second half. Andrea Holzwarth led the Sainty team in scoring with 13 points. Hannah Jones scored 30 for the Lady Jags.
The Lady Indians will now play for seventh place vs the Lady Jags of James Irwin on Saturday at 2:30 PM. In scores of other girls games on Friday, Quinter defeated James Irwin 66-17, Oakley defeated Oberlin 69-48, and Rawlins County defeated Hoxie 55-53.
In boys action, the Indians easily defeated the Decatur County Red Devils by a score of 63-37. St. Francis jumped out to a 13-10 lead at the first quarter break. In the second quarter, the Indians worked the ball for good shots while the Red Devils had a cold shooting performance. The Indians jumped out to 37-16 lead at halftime. The third quarter was more of the same for both teams. St. Francis extended their lead to as much as 29 points. The quarter closed with a score of 54-28. The Indians stretched the lead to 30 points (63-33) with approximately four minutes remaining and the running clock rule took effect. Final score: Indians 63 - Red Devils 37. Ted Crabtree lead the Indians in scoring with 21 points. Trent Kinen added 14 and Matt Raile scored 11.
In other boys games, Quinter defeated Jefferson Academy 43-40, Rawlins County beat James Irwin 72-42, and Hoxie defeated Oakley 57-41. The Indians will now play Rawlins County at 7:00 PM for fifth place.
Saturday, January 19th
The Lady Indians won seventh place by defeating James Irwin (of Colorado Springs) by a score of 52-27. The Lady Indians jumped out to a 13-7 first quarter lead and using good defensive pressure extended the lead to 23-9 by halftime. The third quarter also found the Lady Indians causing numerous turnovers and extending their lead to 39-17. The Lady Indians earn 21 steals and had 10 players contribute to the final team scoring. Final score: Lady Indians 52 - James Irwin 27. Sidnee Crabtree led the team in scoring with 10. Andrea Holzwarth added 9 points. Ten Lady Indians scored in the contest.
In the other girls games on Saturday, Hoxie defeated Decatur County 68-61(third place); Jefferson Academy outscored Quinter 47-45 (fifth place); and Oakley beat Rawlins County 52-36 for championship.
The Indians boys won fifth place by defeating Rawlins County by a score of 64-59. Further details of the game will be added when they become available.
At the conclusion of the tournament, an All-Tournament team was selected. Ted Crabtree was honored by being selected to the team. All-Academic All-Tournament teams were also selected. Players selected from St. Francis were Elizabeth Gienger and Trent Raile.
