On Thursday, January 24th, the St. Francis junior high girls basketball teams hosted Rawlins County in St. Francis.  The games were all close. The seventh grade team earned their first win of the season while the 8th grade girls lost in a very close contest.  Comments from Coach David Morrow follow.

B Team: Junior High Girls Basketball
Win over Rawlins County
1/25/08
22-17

"The game against Rawlins County was a good match-up for us in that we were playing against competition that was basically at the same level we are. And what we found out in this game is that we not only have improved, but we have the ability to win basketball games. We played better in most aspects of our game than we have all year.

The Buffaloes led throughout the entire first half, taking a 2-point lead by halftime. In the second half, however, we began shooting better than we had all year, and opened up a 4-point lead by the end of the third quarter. In fact, we scored 10 of our points in the third quarter, which was the highest scoring quarter we’ve had all year. Not only did we score well in the third quarter, but we also played very good defense, holding the Buffs to only 4 points.

The fourth quarter was very exciting. Both teams were in the bonus and it was a very close ball game with just a couple of minutes left. At some point during that time, Laura Brunk was fouled and hit both of her free throws, which essentially put the game out of reach for Rawlins County. It was a great effort by the 7th grade team.  Scoring: Laura Brunk, 8; Ally Northrup, 6; Clarice Neitzel, 4; Jandy Dunn, 4."

"The 8th grade team has been exciting to watch all season, and this game was no exception. Had we started the game with a little more intensity, we could have won this game.

As we did against Goodland, we trailed at halftime after a lackluster first half. Rawlins County shot the ball well and at the end of the second quarter, we were down by 6. The second half was much more exciting. We had another 9-point quarter in the third period and still trailed by 5 going into the fourth. That’s when the girls started playing their best defense and began making some shots. We were able to force some Rawlins County turnovers and really shut them down with some good defense. With 1:18 left in the game, we had even taken the lead by one point, and it looked like we were on our way to a victory. In those last few moments, however, we had some errors that put the Buffs on the line, and they capitalized on those opportunities.

This game was ours to win, but we simply made too many errors, especially in the first half, to be in command of the game by a comfortable margin. That being said, we show remarkable fight in crunch time, and various individual players put forth great efforts. Jenna Hill had a career night in scoring (15 points) and played some great defense. Kaitlyn Figgins (8 points) also played well in the second half. Lexi Hilt scored 6 and Ashlynn Lambert scored 4."
