Local Students Recognized for Essays Submitted

Congratulations to Brooks and Mikaela!

The freshmen English class under the instruction of Lisa Gibson participated in the a recent essay contest.  The contest, "Kansas!  Say It Above a Whisper," was sponsored by Native Sons and Daughters of Kansas.  Students in grades 8-12 were eligible to vie for a cash prize of $200 in the annual essay contest.

The contest title, which deals with pride in the state of Kansas was coined by early-day Kansas newspaperwoman, Mamie Boyd, whose family provides the cash awards.  The contest was judged by a panel of Kansas Professional Communicators (formerly Kansas Press Women).  The judges looked for originality, creativity, and sincerity in expressing pride in the state of Kansas.

The winner was announced and recognized by the Native Sons and Daughters at their annual banquet on January 25, 2008, at Maner Conference Center, Topeka.  Other award winners were also featured at the banquet including Kansan of the Year, Distinguished Kansan, as well as other honorees.

The essay contest was won by Kristen Anthonis of Mission Valley Middle School in Overland Park, Kansas.  St. Francis students Brooks Hobrock and Mikaela Grace both received letters of recognition for their essays.

The following is an exerpt from the letter:  "Enclosed is a copy of the Native Sons and Daughters Banquet program from January 25th.  Even though your essay, "Kansas, Say It Above a Whisper," did not win the award, the judges were impressed with you entry and thought you should, at least, be mentioned in the program.  You will find their comments on page 22.  Thank you again for entering the Boyd Student Essay contest this year.  We had many fine entries, and yours was one the judges particularly noticed."

The following is an except from the banquet program.  "More than 75 entries were received; others deserving special mention are: Parker Hine, Praire Village; Joshua Peiffer, ElDorado; Kelsi Ausherman, Haven; Kayla Stallbaumer, Seneca; Brooks Hobrock, St. Francis; Mikaela Grace, St. Francis; and Matthew Longabaugh, Sabetha.  Thank you for your excellent submissions."
