Sainty Teams Sweep Cheylin
Tuesday, February 12th--The Cheylin Cougar teams were in St. Francis this evening for high school basketball action. St. Francis prevailed in all of the games played. In junior varsity girls action, the Lady Indians won 25-13 in two quarters. The JV boys team defeated Cheylin 45-37.
In varsity girls action, Cheylin jumped out to a quick 4-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Cougars connected on several outside shots early in the game to give them a 10 point lead. The Lady Indians pressured the Cougars hard defensively and eventually took the lead (22-21) with 2:40 remaining in the second quarter. The Cougars soon regained a slim lead and St. Francis trailed at halftime 28-31.
In the second half, the Lady Indians caused numerous Cheylin turnovers with their defensive pressure and jumped out to a ten point lead (44-34) early in the third. After a time out, Cheylin soon cut into the lead and the score stood at 44-39 with 3:46 remaining in the third quarter. St. Francis lead by four (49-45) at the end of the quarter and went on to win the game 68-58.
Sidnee Crabtree was the only Lady Indian in double figures with 26 points. Tia Sager lead all scorers with 29. The game was interrupted often with fouls and trips to the free throw line. There were 75 free throws shot in the game. St. Francis was 31-44 from the line while Cheylin was only 10-31.
The varsity boys game was only close for one quarter before the Indians gained a comfortable point spread. The Indians led by 2 (14-12) at the end of one quarter of play, but Ted Crabtree was also in foul trouble picking up his third foul with 1:55 remaining the first quarter. In the second quarter, St. Francis began to get easy shots off good offensive execution while the Cougars had difficulty finding the basket. St. Francis led 35-22 at half time. The lead was extended to thirty points by the end of the third quarter (60-30) and the Indians won 78-47.
The Indians showed good offensive balance with four players scoring in double figures. Trent Kinen (20), Ted Crabtree (17), Matt Raile (13), and Trent Raile (11) led the Indian offensive attack. St. Francis attacked the basket well and drew numerous Cheylin fouls. The Indians hit 25-44 free throws to 2 of 8 for Cheylin. Levi Pochop led the Cougars in scoring with 16 points.
Next action for the teams will be on Friday evening when the teams will host Quinter in St. Francis.
