Basketball Season Ends for High School Teams

The St. Francis Indian boys basketball season came to a close Monday night, March 3, when the Indians lost to a good Rawlins County team by a score of 40-76 in Atwood.  Rawlins County jumped out to an early lead of 3-14 with less than four minutes gone in the contest.  The lead advanced to 3-21 before the Indians could score again.  By the end of the first quarter, Rawlins County had made six threes and led 7-24.  The Indians would not recover from the large Buffalo advantage gained early in the game.

The Indians struggled offensively taking mostly contested shots against an aggressive Rawlins County defense and just could not get much offense going.  Rawlins County led 10-35 in the second quarter and 16-39 at half time.

The second half found the Indians playing better, but they trailed 25-60 after three quarters and lost the game 40-76.  The Indians completed their season with a record of 5-15.  The Rawlins County Buffaloes now advance to the Sub-State semifinals on Thursday evening in Plainville.

Trent Kinen led the Indian scoring with 18 points.  Trent Raile added 12.  The Rawlins County Buffaloes got balanced scoring from their starting lineup.  All five starters scored in double figures--Basgall (22), Kastens (20), Cahoj (12), Grafel (10), and Holub (10).

Completing their careers at SFCHS are seniors Trent Kinen, Jacob Riedel, Sam Sowers, and Ethan Zweygardt.

On Tuesday evening, March 3, the girls basketball team traveled to Ellis to play the #1 seeded Ellis Lady Railers in the first round of the Sub-State Tournament.  The Lady Indians were defeated by a strong Ellis team.  Ellis jumped out to a 4-20 lead after one quarter of play and led 10-40 at half time.  The Lady Indians had a difficult time getting shot opportunities against the scrambling, constantly changing Ellis defensive pressure.  Ellis continued to stretch the lead to 20-62 after three quarters and won the game 25-74.

Sidnee Crabtree led the Lady Indians in scoring with eight points. The Lady Railers had eleven players score in the game and were led by Waldschmidt with 14.  Wolf and Taylor each added 12 points.

The Lady Indians end the season with a 4-15 record.  Completing their high school careers are seniors Sidnee Crabtree, Elizabeth Gienger, Andrea Holzwarth, Jami Pevler, and Joni Pevler.
