Elementary Students Participate in Read for the Record
October 09, 2009
On Thursday, October 8th, the St. Francis Elementary students and faculty joined with many others around the planet in an attempt to set a new world's record for reading. As part of the Read for the Record program, people from all over the globe read the same book on the same day. This year, the reading selection was the The Very Hungry Caterpiller by Eric Carle. Principal Scott Carmichael read the book to a gathering of students in the elementary gymnasium. Many others throughout the world joined the project by reading the same book in an attempt to set a new record.
The Read for the Record program began in 2006. The program encourages early childhood literacy skills and their importance to success in life. St. Francis has participated for several years now. Last year the book Corduroy was read by more than 700,000 readers during the Read for the Record. This year the program is hoping to reach the two million reader mark.
St. Francis students enjoyed the reading of the book by Mr. Carmichael. As part of the Read for the Record program, St. Francis students also completed other activities throughout the week.
The sixth grade students shared their favorite book with the younger students by giving a brief description of the book orally to the student body. The 6th grade students then had a drawing for prizes. Two boys, Jason Owens and Travis Rogers, and two girls, McKenzie Taylor and Kattie Jenik, were selected as prize winners in the drawing. The boys will get to walk the sideline at the St. Francis/Syracuse football game while the girls will help cheer.
