Junior High Basketball Season Begins
The junior high boys basketball season is underway. The team opened competition for the 2009 season in Oberlin on Thursday, November 5th, against the Decatur County Red Devils. The start was not what the Indians had hoped for, but the young Indians gave good effort throughout the games. The A team lost to a good shooting Red Devil team by a score of 20-35. Decatur County jumped out to a 6-11 lead after one quarter and extended the lead to 8-23 at halftime. The Indians trailed by 20 (11-31) after three quarters and lost their opening game 20-35.
Coach David Morrow had the following comments on the A team game. "Oberlin had a good team that shot the ball very well. In fact, the disparity in our shooting percentages was one of the main factors of the game. In spite of our mistakes, we would have had a chance to be in the middle of this game had we shot better. We pressured Oberlin late in the second half and were able to generate some turnovers. A few of our shots fell and we were able to make the game somewhat more competitive. One impressive aspect of this team is the intensity with which they played throughout the whole game. I thought they worked hard from start to finish, especially considering our shape was pretty bad."
Scoring in the A team game were: Wyatt Landenburger, 5; Jacob Butler, 5; Cade Bracelin, 4; Mason Schiltz, 4; Kyler Zweygardt, 2.
The B team also lost to Decatur County. St Francis did not score in the first quarter and trailed 0-16. Sainty got on the scoreboard in the second quarter scoring 5 points and trailed 5-23 at the halftime break. The Indians scored 2 more points in second half and trailed 7-34 after three quarters. The final score was Indians 7, Red Devils 37.
Coach Morrow gave the following comments on the B team game: "The first game of the year was pretty rocky for us. We were confused about our responsibilities since we had some people playing in positions they weren’t used to. Some more practice time will help in getting some of those things straightened out. Nonetheless, the boys worked hard and gave their best effort. It was revealed that we have a lot of things to work on, not just in the B team, but at each level. The most exciting part of this game was when Lane Hoffman made a three-pointer just before halftime.
Scoring in the B team game were: Lane Hoffman, 3; Jacob Baxter, 2; Tyler Lee, 2.
