JH Boys Lose to Colby
On Monday, November 30th, the junior high boys basketball teams hosted the Colby Eagles. The games resulted in two losses for the local teams, but the athletes again showed improvement in their skills and knowledge of the game.
Colby proved to have a much more skilled team in the "A" team game and easily defeated the young Indians. The Indians played hard, but fell behind 4-15 after one quarter and were down 4-24 with 3:40 remaining in the second period. The Indians trailed 10-30 at halftime. Trailing 13-47 after three quarters, the Indians continued to play hard but lost the game 23-61 to a skilled Colby team.
The "B" team game was especially exciting as the young Indians led throughout most of the game only to come up a few points short in the final minutes of the game. Neither team scored much early in the contest. The game was tied at 4-4 after one quarter of play. St. Francis had gained an 11-5 lead by halftime. In the third quarter, Colby closed the gap as St. Francis could only score one basket in the period. St. Francis led by a narrow 13-12 margin going into the final period.
In the fourth period, the Indians gained a 20-15 advantage with 3:21 remaining. Colby narrowed the point spread to one (20-19) with 40 seconds left. The Indians committed a foul with nine seconds on the clock to send Colby to the line with a chance to tie our take the lead. The Colby player made the first free throw to tie the game at 20. The second attempt was off, but Colby rebounded the ball. A final field goal attempt at 0:03 was no good. The game went to overtime.
Jacob Baxter made the first basket in overtime to give the Indians a 22-20 advantage. St. Francis then missed two free throws before Colby took the lead (22-24) a short time later. The Indians tied the game on a field goal with 1:24 remaining. The Indians committed a foul with 1:09 left. Colby missed both free throws. Colby scored another basket to bring the score to 24-26 with 37 seconds left. After an Indian turnover, the Indians fouled again. Colby missed both free throws but rebounded the second miss for a stickback basket giving the Eagles a four point win (24-28) in overtime.
Next action for the young Indians will be Tuesday, December 8th, when the Indians host Grant Junior High (Goodland) in St. Francis. Tipoff is set for 4:30 PM.
