Life Skills Class Learns to Polka
Many Useful Skills Taught
The 7th grade students have learned many interesting things this semester in Life Skills class. On Tuesday, January 5th, they were taught the basics of the polka dance. Life Skills instructor Kaye O'Brien, along with help from guest instructors, Dan and Dot Stang, gave the students and introduction to the polka. Students practiced the dance to music played during class. All seemed to enjoy!
Some other activities students have completed in the Life Skills class include: making poached, scrambled, boiled and deviled eggs; omelets; dill pickles; pancakes, waffles, biscuits, and muffins; pie crusts, doughnuts, cookies, brownies, and coffee cake; french fries; plum jam; chocolate pie; bread, cinnamon rolls, and tearings. The students have also discussed grooming; clothing; laundry and stains; sewing on buttons, hems, minor clothing repair, and ironing. The students have created a backback as their sewing project.
Recent discussions have covered topics such as manners in business; getting a job and job correspondence; banking and check writing; self esteem, morals, and forgiveness; how to be a guest; opportunities and goals; friend selection and peer pressure; and wedding etiquette. The students even upholstered twenty chairs for the high school library.
