Lady Indians Swept at Home

On September 7th, the Lady Indian volleyball team played their first home matches of the season when they hosted teams from Decatur Community and Colby High Schools. The Lady Indians lost all of the matches played on the evening.

In varsity action against Decatur Community, the Lady Indians got off to a slow start in set one and a trailed 1-5 and 4-14 before getting much going. The girls played better in the later part of the set, but fell behind by 10 (12-22) and lost set one by a score of 15-25.

In set two, a similar scenario occurred. The Lady Indians fell behind 2-8 early, and then recovered somewhat to bring the score to 8-15. The Indians did not pass or set very accurately in the match which limited their offensive attack. Decatur Community won the match by a 12-25 score.

The match against Colby was very exciting! Colby won the match in three sets, but the Lady Indians gave them all they wanted. Early in the first set, the competition was very close. St. Francis led 9-8, but then made a series of nice attacks to earn a 18-13 lead. The Lady Indians then missed two consecutive serves and had two net violations to allow the Lady Eagles to cut into the lead (19-17). St. Francis took a 20-18 lead on a kill by Aubree Schlepp. A kill by Shayla Hilt advanced the score to 21-18. St. Francis took a four point led (23-19) after Aly Marin recorded a kill. Colby soon tied the set at 24. After St. Francis was called for a carry, Colby had a one point lead and the serve. St. Francis won the next point to tie the set at 25. The Lady Indians received a kill by Christina Hilt for a 26-25 lead. Colby took the lead 26-27 but a kill by Kaitlin Figgins tied the set again at 27-all. St. Francis committed a net violation to give Colby another one point advantage. The Lady Eagles won the following point and the first set 27-29.

In the second set, St. Francis jumped out to a 6-2 lead only to have the Lady Eagles regain the advantage at 7-6. The game was tied at 11 when Colby began to take control. The Lady Eagles soon had a five point advantage (12-17). The Lady Indians began to execute more efficiently, and a kill by Kaitlin Figgins helped the home team cut into the deficit (15-18). Another Figgins kill made the score 16-19. Christina Hilt earned a kill cut the lead to one (19-20). Figgins then served up an ace to tie the set. Colby earned a two point advantage only to have the Lady Indians tie the score at 22. Mikaela Grace made the last three kills of the set to give the Lady Indians a hard-earned win in set two 25-23.

Aubree Schlepp gave the Indians an early 5-1 lead in the final set with some good serves. St. Francis jumped out to 7-3 lead, but the Lady Eagles soon recovered and tied the set at nine each. Colby went on to take a 10-15 lead. St. Francis won two rallies, but missed two consecutive serves to give the Lady Eagles a 12-17 lead. Colby soon stretched the lead to 13-20. Figgins helped cut into the lead (17-21) with some good serving but Colby went on to defeat the Lady Indians by a score of 17-25.

In junior varsity action, Decatur Community defeated St. Francis 22-25; 17-25. Colby defeated the junior varsity team in three sets 19-25; 28-26; 5-15.

The Lady Indian C Team was defeated by Decatur Community 21-25; 22-25 and by Colby 14-25; 21-25.

Next action for the team will be on September 9th, when the Wauneta-Palisade (NE) comes to St. Francis. Action begins at 4:00 PM.
