Lady Indians Defeat Lady Broncos
The Lady Indian volleyball teams split their contests against the Lady Broncos from Wauneta-Palisade on Thursday, September 9th. The St. Francis junior varsity team lost in three sets while the varsity Lady Indians won their match.
The junior varsity match started with the teams trading points to be tied 5-5. A few good plays by the Lady Indians and a few mistakes by the visitors soon gave the Lady Indians an 11-6 advantage. The Lady Broncos soon regained some momentum and Lexi Hilt's kill ended a St. Francis drought at 11-11. The Lady Indians then earned a 23-12 advantage using some good serving by Clarice Neitzel and Jacquelyn Ketzner. St Francis won set one 25-17.
St. Francis jumped out to a 5-1 lead in set two, but the Lady Broncos soon had the lead trimmed to one (6-5). Ketzner gave the Lady Indians some breathing room with good serving leading to a Sainty 15-9 advantage. Wauneta-Palisade soon evened the game at 18. A Jacquelyn Ketzner kill gave the Lady Indians a 21-18 lead, but the Broncos regained the lead at 22-21 on an ace serve. The game was tied again at 23, but Wauneta-Palisade went on to win the set 25-23. The teams played closely throughout set three, but the Lady Indians were defeated in set three 12-15.
The varsity teams played a best of five match. St. Francis outplayed the Lady Broncos and won handily in three straight sets. The Lady Indians executed well and made few errors on the evening and dominated two of the three sets.
In set one, St. Francis jumped out to a 12-3 lead using some good serving and capitalizing on many free balls from the Lady Broncos. The lead extended to 17-4 and the Lady Indians cruised to a 25-14 win in set one. Aubree Schlepp had an ace serve to seal the set on game point.
Set two was very similar. The Lady Indians jumped out to a 6-1 lead and gained a ten point advantage (18-8) on a stuff by Kaitlin Figgins. The Lady Indians won set two easily, 25-9.
The Lady Broncos executed much better in set three. The score was tied at 15 when Figgins recorded another stuff to give the Lady Indians a slim lead. A Figgins kill later gave the Lady Indians a 17-16 advantage. Shayla Hilt then served up an ace for a two point lead (18-16). Before the run was over, the Lady Indians led 20-16. St. Francis won the third set to sweep the match 25-20.The varsity team will participate in the Gove County Fall Classic at Wheatland/Grinnell on Saturday, September 11th. The tournament begins at 9:00 AM. The junior varsity will be playing the Wichita County JV Tournament in Leoti which also begins at 9:00 AM.
