Junior High Tracksters Perform Well at Hoxie
McKayla Taylor Sets New School Record
The junior high track teams competed in a track meet in Hoxie on Thursday, May 5th. The meet included teams from Greeley County, Grinnell/Wheatland, Hoxie, Quinter, and St. Francis. The St. Francis teams competed very well in all four divisions.
St. Francis won the seventh grade boys division. The Indians scored 101 team points to easily out-distance the other four teams. Hoxie scored 65 points to place second. Greeley County (49) placed third, Grinnell/Wheatland (47) fourth, and Quinter (36) fifth.
7th Grade Boys Division
Garrett Brunk won the 100 meter hurdles (18.11) and Travis Rogers was third (19.95). Carl Fabre placed second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.06. Lane Hobrock (14.02) was third and Francisco Fernandez (14.59) was fourth in the 100 meter dash. Clay Cassaw placed 5th in the 400 meters (1:13.88) and 4th in the 200 meter hurdles at 35.84. Austin Patton ran 2:52.77 in the 800 meters to place 4th. In the 200 meter dash, Carl Fabre (27.74), Lane Hobrock (28.39), and Garrett Brunk (29.94) placed 2nd, 3rd, and 5th respectively.
The 4 X 400 meter relay team of Garrett Brunk, Travis Rogers, Francisco Fernandez, and Justin Pacheco placed first with a time of 57.41. St. Francis did not compete in the 4 X 200 or 4X 400 relay in this meet.
In the field events, Jakob Church placed 1st in the shot put with a heave of 29' 2". Chris Hoard (28' 1") was second and Jude Faulkender was 4th (26' 9") in the shot. St. Francis placed three seventh grade boys in the discus: Chris Hoard (76' 2") 2nd, Justin Pacheco (75' 2") 3rd, and Jakob Church (69' 1") 5th. Carl Fabre leaped 14' 10 1/2" to place second in the long jump. See video below.
Garrett Brunk was close behind with a third place jump of 14' 6". Francisco Fernandez placed 5th in the long jump (12' 3"). Lane Hobrock won the triple jump with a good distance of 29' 11". St. Francis earned three places in the high jump: Fernandez (4' 6") 3rd, Fabre (4' 6") 4th, and Hobrock (4' 6") 5th. There was no pole vault event at the Hoxie meet.
7th Grade Girls Division
The 7th grade Lady Indians placed 2nd in the Hoxie meet with 77 team points. Grinnell/Wheatland won the meet with 94 points. Hoxie (51) placed 3rd in the team standings, Greeley County (49) 4th, and Quinter (33) 5th.
St. Francis took the first three places in the 100 meter hurdles. McKenzie Taylor won the event. Emily Elfers was second and Hannah Wolff third. There was no official time in the event due to a malfunction of the automatic timing system. Emily Elfers placed 4th in the 100 meter dash with a time of 15.00 seconds. Emily also placed 2nd in the 200 meter hurdles (34.84). Kylie Sherlock won the 400 meter dash (1:10.42). McKenzie Taylor won the 200 meters (28.66) and CarolEve Harris placed 4th (31.86).
St. Francis won the 4 X 100 meter relay with a 58.14 clocking. The relay team consisted of Emily Elfers, CarolEve Harris, Kylie Sherlock, and McKenzie Taylor. The 4 X 200 meter relay team consisting of CarolEve Harris, Kayla Reed, Journey Lee, and Hannah Stafford placed 2nd (2:13.25). St. Francis did not participate in the 4 X 400 relay.
In the 7th girls field events, Kayla Reed placed 2nd in the shot put (26' 4") and Sydney Sundstrom placed 5th (23' 10 1/2"). Kattie Jenik placed 4th in the discus with a throw of 59' 5 3/4". McKenzie Taylor jumped 12' 2 1/4" in the long jump to place 3rd. Kylie Sherlock placed 2nd in the triple jump with a leap of 27' 2 1/5".
8th Girls Division
The 8th grade girls placed 2nd in the track meet with 86 team points. Hoxie won the 8th girls division with 99 points. Grinnell/Wheatland (81) placed 3rd, Quinter (32) 4th, and Greeley County (26) 5th.
McKayla Taylor won the 200 meter hurdles setting a new school record with a time of 33.09 (ee video).
McKayla also won the 100 meter hurdles a time of 17.36. Valerie Wurm won the 100 meter dash (13.68) and Echo Jones placed 3rd (14.27). Echo also placed 3rd in the 800 meter run at 2:55.32. St. Francis placed three girls in the 200 meter dash: Valerie Wurm 2nd (29.19), Ashlee Orth 4th (31.81), and Dallas Reed 5th (32.06). Justice Wiley placed 3rd in the 3200 meter run with a time of 15.42.36.
The 4 X 100 meter relay team of Valerie Wurm, Mariah Beikman, Echo Jones, and McKaya Taylor placed first with a time of 57.57. Kyla Bandel, Mariah Beikman, Dallas Reed, and Justice Wiley placed 2nd in the 4 X 200 meter relay running 2:12.90.
Aby Fernandez placed 5th in the shot put (25' 10 1/2") and 3rd in the discus (61' 1 1/2"). Echo Jones was second in the long jump at 13' 1 1/2". Valerie Wurm (12' 1 1/2") and McKayla Taylor (12' 1/2") placed 4th and 5th in the long jump. Dallas Reed placed 5th in the triple jump with a leap of 26' 8" and won the high jump clearing 4' 4". Justice Wiley (3rd) and Ashlee Orth (4th) both cleared 4' 0" in the high jump.
8th Boys Division
The 8th grade boys placed third in the meet scoring 55 team points. Quinter won the 8th boys division with 68. Hoxie placed 2nd (65), Greeley County 4th (43) and Grinnell/Wheatland 5th (41).
Matt Howell won the 200 meter hurdles (32.59) and placed second in the 100 meter hurdles (17.15). See video of 200 hurdles below.
Matt also placed 2nd in the 3200 meter run at 14:37.46. Riley Shay placed 4th in the 3200 meters at 16:23.94. Tanner Gilliland placed 3rd in the 100 meter dash at 15.01. Jonathan Hoard placed 3rd in the 1600 meter run at 9:07.37.
Cade Bracelin won the shot put throwing 42' 6" while Kyler Zweygardt was 4th at 35' 0". See video of Cade below.
Kyler won the discus with a throw of 123' 0". Cade Bracelin (115' 4") and Shakota Blanka (81' 10) were 2nd and 5th.

The next meet for the teams will be on Friday, May 13th, when they will compete in the Northwest Kansas League Track and Field Meet in St. Francis. Competition begins at 10:00 AM.
