Basketball Teams Lose in NWKL 2nd Round
St. Francis lost both semi-final games in the Northwest Kansas League Tournament in Quinter on Friday, January 20. The boys lost to a very good Ness City Eagle team, and the girls lost to the Quinter Lady Bulldogs.
In varsity girls action, the Lady Indians fell behind early in the contest trailing 5-10 after a trey by Quinter. The Lady Bulldogs led by ten in the period, but St. Francis only trailed 15-22 after one quarter of play when Jenna Hill hit a buzzer-beater from beyond half court.
The Lady Dawgs again stretched the lead, but Kaitlin Figgins moved the score to 21-30 after a stick-back basket. After consecutive baskets by Figgins and Laura Brunk, the Lady Indians were within five (25-30). The half ended with the Lady Indians trailing 30-36.
In the second half, the Lady Indians fell behind 34-45 at the 5:14 mark and trailed 38-51 with 3:06 left in the period. The Lady Indians were struggling to score and were committing too many turnovers. Meanwhile, the Lady Dawgs were finding the basket regularly, often from long range. The third period closed with the Lady Indians trailing 47-55.
The Lady Indians trailed by ten points (54-64) with 3:06 left, but could get no closer. The Lady Indians lost the game 70-58.
Kaitlin Figgins led the Lady Indians in scoring with 27 points. Laura Brunk added 9 and Jenna Hill 7. The Lady Indians were 14 of 21 from the free throw line.
Brooke Flax led all scorers in the game with 28 points. Kayla Zerr added 17 and Missy Reed 9 to the Lady Dawgs point total. The Lady Dawgs were 8 of 13 from the line.
Both teams made 19 2-point goals. The Lady Dawgs made 8 treys, while the Lady Indains only made two.
The Indians were defeated by a very fundamental Ness City Eagle team 55-78. Ness City jumped out to quick 0-6 advantage and led by ten (3-13) with just under two minutes gone in the contest. The Eagles scored again at the 4:57 mark after an Indian turnover led to an easy basket (3-15). The Indians would recover, at least somewhat. After a couple treys by Isaac Schiltz, the lead was trimmed to 12-17 with 2:23 left in the first period. The quarter closed with the Indians playing well, but trailing, 14-19. Isaac Schiltz scored the first eleven Indian points.
Ness City moved the ball well against the Indian's defense and connected on a high percentage of their shots in the second period. The Eagles stretched the lead to 14-32 by the 4:05 mark in the second period after connecting on several treys. The Indians did not score in the period until there was 3:52 left when Matt Tygardt stopped the bleeding with a two-point basket. (16-32). The half ended with the Indians trailing 26-38. Isaac Schiltz scored 20 points in the first half.
The Indians got within ten (34-44) with 4:18 left in the third period. A trey by Wyatt Landenberger cut the deficit to nine (39-48) with 3:19 left, but the Eagle's Drew Clark answered with two consecutive treys (39-54). Mason Schiltz picked up his fourth foul with 1:20 left in the period when Clark drove the ball to the rim. The period closed with the score 44-56, Eagles.The Eagles stretched the lead to 44-61 with 7:28 left and led by twenty (50-70) with 3:54 remaining. The Indians lost the contest to a very good Ness City Eagles team 55-78.
Isaac Schilz (26) and Dylan Peter (13) led the Indian scoring. The Indians were 8 of 13 from the line.
Drew Clark (6' 2" Sr.) led Ness City with 28 points. Foos chipped in 17, Gants 11, and VonLehe 9. With the loss, the Indians moved into the third place contest against Rawlins County. Ness City moved into the championship game against Hoxie.
