Varsity Teams Lose to Weskan
JV Teams Win
The Weskan Coyote basketball teams defeated the home-standing St. Francis teams on Tuesday evening, January 24th. The evening began with the junor varsity games. The boys junior varsity team defeated the young Coyotes 45-38. The Indians fell behind early 4-11, but recovered to a 10-13 deficit by the end of the first period.
With 26 seconds gone in the second quarter, Lenny Olivares scored on a stick-back basket to cut the lead to one (12-13). The Coyotes scored a couple more baskets before the Indians would score again. With 2:54 left in the period, Wyatt Landenberger made a three and was fouled on the play. Wyatt also made the free throw for a four-point-play to give the Indians their first lead of the game (20-19). At 2:04, Wyatt made a nice pass to Joey McCormick for two allowing the Indians to regain the lead again (22-21). Landenberger gave the Indians at 3-point lead with another basket a few moments later. Weskan scored just before the half ended to bring the halftime score to 24-23, Indians.
The first shot of the second half, a Weskan trey, put the Coyotes back in front. St. Francis took the lead for good with 5:18 to go in the third period on a trey by Joey McCormick. Joey followed the first trey with another at 1:46 to move the score to 30-27. McCormick scored his third trey of the quarter with three seconds left to give the Indians a 35-27 cushion after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, the Indians increased their lead to nine points and went on to win 45-38 over a very scrappy Weskan team.
In the girls varsity contest, the Lady Indians fell behind quickly 0-9. Kaitlin Figgins scored the only basket of the quarter for the Lady Indians. The Lady Indians trailed 2-17 after one quarter of play. The Lady Indians hurried shots and committed numerous turnovers against the good pressure defense of the Lady Coyotes. The Coyotes were also gaining an advantage on the boards.
The Lady Coyotes led 3-27 when Laura Brunk hit a shot from the left corner with 4:05 left in the half. With 2:41 left, the Lady Indians were down by twenty-five (5-30). The half ended with the score 11-35.
Jenna Hill connected on a buzzer-beater from beyond half-court to close the third period with the score standing at 20-48. The Lady Indians were defeated by a good Weskan team 30-59.
Aly Schlepp led the Lady Indians in scoring with 8 points. Clarice Neitzel added 7. The Lady Indians were 5 of 10 from the free throw line.
The Lady Coyotes were led by senior Kellie Young with 21 points. Sophomore Kelsey Hale scored 16 and Jori Mote chipped in 9. The Lady Coyotes were 13 of 20 from the free throw line.
The junior varsity girls won their two-quarter contest by one point.
The varsity boys game was a "barn burner." The Indians lost by three, 79-76, in overtime to a very fundamental Weskan team. Weskan took an early 0-6 lead before the Indians got on the board: a free throw by Isaac Schiltz at 5:58. The Indians were launching a lot of three-point attempts, but were not finding the net. The Indians trailed 6-14 after one period.With less than 15 seconds gone in the second period, Issac Schiltz stole the ball from a Weskan player and scored a lay-up. Isaac followed with a three-ball to move the score to 11-16. With 4:41 left in the half, the Indians tied the game at 18-all when Wyatt Landenberger drove the baseline and made an acrobatic lay-up. Weskan again gained the advantage, but a trey by Isaac Schiltz with 59 seconds left gave the Indians a 30-28 lead, their first of the contest. The halftime score was 30-32 in favor of the Coyotes.
At 6:58 in the third, Jonathan Butler scored to tie the game. The Indians soon trailed by six, but a nice pass by Butler to Mason Schiltz for a basket cut the lead to 38-40 at the 4:10 mark. The Indians trailed 45-51 after three periods.
At the 3:40 mark in the fourth quarter, Mason Schiltz stole the ball from Weskan and took it to the rim. Cade Bracelin followed the attempt with a stick-back basket (plus one) to bring the score to 56-58. The Indians were gaining momentum.
Isaac Schiltz scored with 2:51 left to move the score to 58-60. Wyatt Landenberger followed with a steal. A trey by Dylan Peter with 2:30 left gave the Indians a 61-60 advantage. The Indians fouled on the next Weskan possession, but the Coyotes missed both attempts. Dylan Peter was fouled with 2:06 left, and calmly sank both shots. The Indians led 63-60. Weskan scored two free throws, and isaac Schiltz answered with a basket at the 1:45 mark (65-62).With 1:26 left, Weskan tied the contest with a trey. St. Francis called time out to set up a play. The Indians missed the shot and fouled on the rebound (1:18). Again, the Coyotes missed both free throws. With 1:08 left, St. Francis again called time out. Dylan Peter scored on an offensive rebound with 49 seconds left to give the Indians a two-point advantage. Weskan scored with 39 seconds left to tie the contest at 67-all. The Indians missed their next shot attempt with 11 seconds remaining and the Coyotes recovered the ball. The Weskan shot attempt was rebounded by Dylan Peter with 1 second remaining and time out was called. The Indians threw the ball to the far end of the court where Peter attempted a game-winning shot. The shot failed to go in the basket. The game, tied at 67-all, moved to overtime.
The four-minute overtime began with Weskan scoring at the 3:23 mark. With 2:53 left, Isaac Schiltz stole the ball from a Weskan player. Six seconds later, Cade Bracelin was fouled. Cade made both free throws to tie the game at 69-all. On the next Weskan possession, Mason Schiltz deflected a Coyote pass that was intercepted by Dylan Peter. Jonathan Butler followed with a trey with 2:15 left (72-69). On the next possession, the Indians fouled a Weskan player while shooting a three. Weskan cashed in of all three throws to tie the contest (72-72) again.
Dylan Peter scored on an offensive rebound with 1:38 left to give the Indians the lead again. Weskan answered 12 seconds later. Cade Bracelin made an good post entry pass to Dylan Peter who was fouled on the move with 1:10 left. Dylan made both free throws (76-74). The Indians fouled Weskan again with 1:01 left. Weskan sank both throws to tie the contest for the final time. Jonathan Butler attempted a shot with 20 ticks left on the clock. The shot was blocked by the Coyote's Samuel McKinney and Weskan recaptured the ball. With eight seconds left, Hayden Walker drained a three from NBA range to give the Coyotes the lead. The Indians got one more attempt at a three, but the ball did not find the net. The Indians played extremely hard, but lost to a good Weskan team 76-79 in overtime.
St. Francis connected on ten treys in the contest, Dylan Peter and Isaac Schiltz each scored 22 points for the Indians. Jonathan Butler added 15 points. The Indians were 12 of 19 from the free throw line. Dylan Peter was strong on the glass, gathering 16 rebounds in the contest. Jonathan Butler and Peter each had 6 assists.
Wekan had four players in double figures: Samuel McKinney 25, Hayden Walker 10, Jared McKinney 14, and Derek Frasier 11. The Coyotes were 16 of 25 from the line.
The teams will play Brewster-TriPlains in Brewster on Tuesday, January 31st.
