Junior High Girls Split With RC

The junior high girls basketball teams played Rawlins County in St. Francis on Monday, January 6th.  Each of the schools won one contest -- Rawlins County won the A-Team game and St. Francis the B-team contest.

The B-Team game was played as two periods only due to limited player numbers.  St. Francis fell behind 0-4 in the B-Team contest before Alexis Frink scored for the Lady Indians.  The first period closed with the score 2-4.

At 4:58 in the second and final period, Kattie Jenik connected on a three-point shot to give the Lady Indians their first lead of the game, 5-4.  RC would answer a short time later.  At 2:45, Katie Schmid stole the basketball from a RC player and took it for a lay-in to get the Lady Indians back on top 7-6.  Rawlins County led 7-9 when Alexis Frink connected on a three-point shot with 33 seconds left to give the Indians a 10-9 victory.

Frink led the Indians with 5 points.  Kattie Jenik added 3 and Katie Schmid 2.

In the A-Team contest, the Lady Buffs quickly jumped out to a 3-10 lead in period one.  A Kylie Sherlock stick-back basket (plus one) cut the led to 6-10 with 5:04 left in the second period.  At 3:48, a steal and basket by Kayla Reed moved the score to 8-12.  With 1:25 left in the half, Kylie Sherlock stole the ball and passed ahead to McKenzie Taylor for two points to cut the deficit to two points (10-12).  RC banked in a trey from the right wing with 19 seconds left to make the halftime score 10-15.

The teams played evenly in the third period.  Rawlins County led by seven before baskets by Kylie Sherlock, Sydney Sundstrom, and McKenzie Taylor cut the lead to 16-19 with 1:57 left.  The Lady Buffs scored late in the period to close the third period at 16-21.

With less than 15 seconds gone in the final period, Taylor connected on a three-point shot.  Kylie Sherlock followed with a steal and a nice pass to Journey Lee for two points at the 5:15 mark.  The Lady Indians had tied the contest at 21-all and had momentum.  Unfortunately, the Lady Indians would only score once more, a trey by Taylor at 1:01.  The Lady Buffs scored 13 points in the closing minutes to hand the Lady Indians a 23-34 loss.

McKenzie Taylor led the Lady Indian scoring with 9 points.  Kylie Sherlock (7), Kayla Reed (3), Journey Lee (2), and Sydney Sundstrom (2) added to the Lady Indian's point total.  The Lady Buffs were led by Olivia Chvatal with 13 points.

The teams will play Quinter in St. Francis on Thursday, February 9th.
