Musicians Selected for Honor Groups

The KMEA Northwest Kansas District Mini Convention I will be held on November 5th at Hays High School. The convention features concerts by three groups of outstanding young musicians, the High School Honor Jazz Band, the Junior High Honor Band and the Junior High Honor Choir.

Musicians from the 22 county Northwest Kansas district submit audition tapes from which the best instrumentalists are selected for the Honor Bands. Participants of the Honor Choir are selected based on Director Recommendation.

Logan Whitmore, a senior at SFCHS, has been selected to play 2nd chair trumpet in the High School Jazz Band. This small ensemble of 16 talented high school musicians will be directed by Brad Dawson, Assistant Professor of Music at Fort Hays State University. This will be Logan’s third year to perform with the Honor Jazz Band. 

Of the 95 music students named to this years Junior High Honor Band, eighth grader Sydney Sundstrom was selected to play 4th chair trumpet. Doug Talbott, Bethany College Professor Emeritus of Music, will be the conductor. This is Sydney’s second year to participate in the Honor Band.

Vocalists from St. Francis who will be performing with the Junior High Honor Choir are Jenna Confer, Alexis Frink, CarolEve Harris, Kattie Jenik, Hannah Stafford and Hannah Wolff. The Choir will be under the direction of Dr. Carol Krueger, Director of Choral Activities at Emporia State University. CarolEve, Kattie and Hannah Wolff were members of the Honor Choir last year as well.

The musicians will travel to Hays on Saturday, November 5th where they will spend the day in rehearsals followed by public concerts at 3:30 PM at Hays High School. All are students of Debbie Fiala, Saint Francis Jr.-Sr. High School Music Director.
