Basketball Teams Sweep Titans
On Tuesday, January 31, the St. Francis High School basketball teams traveled to Brewster to compete with the Triplains/Brewster Titans. The Indian teams won all four contests played.
In varsity girls action, the Lady Indians only took eight seconds to get on the scoreboard. A nice pass from Aly Schlepp to Kaitlin Figgins resulted in a quick basket to open the contest. The Lady Indians gained a 9-2 advantage when Schlepp hit at shot from the right wing with 4:15 left. The Lady Indians led 17-10 after one quarter of play.
A basket by Audrey Mills with 4:15 left in the second period advanced the score to 25-14. Even though the Lady Indians were giving the Lady Titans numerous shots on offensive rebounds, the Lady TItans were having trouble finding the basket. The Lady Indians led 34-18 at the half.
The Lady Indian lead in the third period ranged from 13 to 19 points. The Lady Indians led 47-33 after three quarters.
A trey by TP/B with 4:54 left cut the lead to 51-40, but Kaitlin Figgins answered with a basket less than 10 seconds later. With 2:02 remaining, an assist from Figgins to Aly Schlepp gave the Lady Indians a 61-43 lead. The Lady Indians defeated the Triplains/Brewster Lady Titans 64-52.
Kaitlin Figgins scored 19 points for the Lady Indians. Clarice Neitzel scored 15, and Aly Schlepp 9. The Lady Indians were 13 of 22 from the free throw line
The Lady Titans were led in scoring by Plummer with 20, Rogge with 15, and Rouler with 10. The Lady Titans were 3 of 12 from the stripe.
The girls junior varsity game was limited to two quarters due the number of available players. St. Francis led 13-6 after one period and won the shortened contest 27-10.
In varsity boys action, a Dylan Peter trey gave the Indians at 10-4 lead at 4:07 in the first period. Triplains/Brewster cut the lead to two (10-8) before the Indians went on a 13-0 run to close the period. A trey by Peter with 2:32 left moved the score to 13-8. Isaac Schiltz followed with a three-ball. Peter scored again off an assist by Mason Schitlz to advance the score to 18-8 with just under a minute left in quarter one. The next Indian possession resulted in another trey by Dylan Peter. Matt Tygart scored the final basket of the period off an assist by Peter. The Indians led 23-8 after one period.
Triplains/Brewster scored the first basket of the second period, but Dylan Peter followed it with another trey. Dylan connected on 4 of 5 three-point attempts early in the contest. A stick-back basket by Matt Tygart with less than a minute left allowed the Indians to earn 34-18 lead at halftime.
Even though the Indians missed several close shots early in the third period, they were crashing the boards and working very hard on defense. The Indians stretched the lead to 43-18 before the Titans would score again. A Keegan Sherlock three with 2:48 left in the third period gave the Indians a 46-20 lead. A steal and assist by Cade Bracelin (I. Schiltz basket) gave the Indians a thirty-point lead (50-20) with 2:09 left in quarter three. The third period closed with the Titans hitting a 3/4-court buzzer-beater. The score stood at 54-23.
The fourth period was played with a running clock. The Indians extended their lead to 64-23 and won the contest 66-29. The Indians controlled the game throughout and played some of their best defense of the year.
Dylan Peter led the Indians with 19 points (17 in the 1st half). Isaac Schiltz scored 17 and Matt Tygart 8. The Indians only hit 1 of 6 from the free throw line.
Triplains/Brewster had three players score seven points each. The Titans were 5 of 9 at the line.
The junior varsity boys contest opened with Cade Bracelin passing to Jacob Baxter for two points. A basket by Baxter with 5:31 left in the first period gave the Indians an early 10-point lead (11-1). The first period closed with the Indians in command, 19-6.The Indian lead was 24-6 at the 5:50 mark in the second period. Everyone on the Indian team received playing time in the first half. The Indians led 30-16 at halftime.
The play in the second half was "wild and crazy." At times, the game resembled a pinball machine with the basketball and players bouncing off each other all over the court. The Indians did not play nearly as well in the second half, but worked hard and held a 35-18 lead after three quarters. The Indians won the contest 43-24.
The team will play Wallace County (Sharon Springs) in Sharon Springs on Tuesday, February 7th.
