Livestock Judging Team Competes in Oakley

On Wednesday, April 9th, the SFCHS FFA/4-H Livestock Judging team consisting of Garrett Brunk, Shakotah Blanka, Emily Elfers and Makayla Rogers competed at the district contest in Oakley. The contest had eight classes and three sets of oral reasons. Classes included:  Performance bulls, 3 classes of heifers, 2 goat classes, wether dams (sheep) and one market hog class. Their were 19 teams from around the district present and over 160 individuals in the Senior and Greenhand divisions. As a team, the group placed 11th in the senior division. Garrett Brunk placed ninth as an individual beating out tenth place by one point in reasons. Emily's scores were not counted towards the team score since she isn't an official FFA member this year. She still competed well and was ranked third on the team.

The 4-H and FFA judging teams decided to work cooperatively this year to accommodate the busy schedules of the high schoolers and better prepare judgers for the tough competition on the local and state level. Marty Fear, local 4-H extension agent and judging coach, has been working with the team, organizing practices and offering guidance this spring. With a few more practices and workouts the team hopes to improve scores and placings at the next contest. The district contest served as a valuable practice for the team as they prepare for the state contest in Manhattan in May.
