Lady Indians Defeat Bobcats; Lose to Cardinals

The Lady Indian volleyball team split their matches on Tuesday, September 23, with Bethune and Hayes Center. In their first match of the day, the Lady Indians were defeated by the Hayes Center Lady Cardinals 10-25; 19-25. The Lady Indians defeated the Bethune Lady Bobcats in their next match in three games, 20-25; 25-12; 25-19.

The Lady Indians did not appear very sharp in their first game against Hayes Center (HC). The Lady Cardinals jumped out to a quick 1-6 lead, a run that was eventually stopped by HC attack error. The Lady Indians pulled with two (6-8) after a stuff block by Zoe Sundstrom and an ace by Sydney Sundstrom. Unfortunately, the next seven points were all scored by Hayes Center, and the margin widened to 6-15 before a kill by Emily Elfers stopped another Lady Cardinal run. The Lady Cardinals dominated game one winning 10-25.

The Lady Indians competed much better in the second game. St. Francis led 2-1 after a dump-set by Kyla Bandel and a stuff by Emily Elfers. The Lady Indians missed the next serve, but Hayes Center also missed their serve. After kills by Elfers, Katie Schmid, and Ashlee Orth, the Lady Indians led 6-4. An HC ace tied the game at 6-all, and the five-point run (6-9) stalled on a Lady Cardinal hitting error. Trailing 8-9, an ace serve by Schmid and a kill by Kylie Sherlock gave St. Francis a slim one-point advantage. After two more missed serves by the Lady Indians within a few volleys, the Lady Cardinals took a 13-16 lead. The Lady Indians tied the game at 16 after kills by Kyla Bandel, Zoe Sundstrom, and an HC attack landed in the net after a long scrambling volley. Late in the game, the Lady Cardinals began to widen the gap as the Lady Indian miscues mounted. St. Francis lost to Hayes Center 19-25 in game two.

The Lady Indians jumped out to a 7-3 lead in game one against Bethune as a result of kills by Emily Elfers and Kyla Bandel and strong serves by Sydney Sundstrom. Bethune scored the next six points to take the lead. The Lady Bobcats built an 8-13 lead before a kill by Katie Schmid stopped the run. The margin decreased to 14-16 after several Bethune miscues. A Bethune kill and ace plus two misplayed balls by the Lady Indians (touch of out-ball and mis-communication error) again gave the Lady Bobcats a comfortable lead, 14-20. The Lady Indians lost game one 20-25.

In game two, the Lady Indians wasted little time in establishing control. Three ace serves, one each by Kyla Bandel, Ashlee Orth, and Zoe Sundstrom, resulted in a 4-2 lead. Consecutive passing and attack errors by the Lady Bobcats widened the advantage to 10-3. Consecutive missed serves, two passing errors, and a net violation by the Lady Indians trimmed the margin to 12-10. The Lady Bobcats missed their next serve attempt, and Ashlee Orth followed with an ace serve. At the end of Ashlee's term of service, the Lady Indians had regained a sizable lead, 20-10. The final point of the game came on a Kyla Bandel ace. The Lady Indians won game two 25-12.

The Lady Indians jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the deciding game with Zoe Sundstrom serving up five consecutive points. Only one kill was earned in the exchange, that by Emily Elfers. The Lady Bobcats trimmed the margin to 8-7 on a communication error by the Lady Indians. An ace by Zoe Sundstrom moved the scoreboard to 17-11, and Bethune set into the net on the next play. A serving error by the Bobcats widened the margin to 23-15. Katie Schimd finalized the game with a kill to make the score 25-19. The Lady Indians earned a hard fought victory over the Bethune Lady Bobcats.

The volleyball teams will play Chase County and Dundy County Stratton in Imperial on Thursday, September 25.
