Junior High Volleyball Teams Split With Hoxie

On Thursday, the junior high volleyball teams split their matches with Hoxie. The St. Francis A team lost to a good Hoxie team in two sets, 14-25; 14-25. The Lady Indian B team defeated Hoxie in three games, 25-19, 12-25, 15-10.

The St. Francis B team played a very close first game with Hoxie. The lead changed several times throughout, and the spread was never more than a few points until the Lady Indians took control in the final volleys and gained a hard earned 25-19 win.

In game two, St. Francis fell behind 1-7 in the early portion of the game and never recovered. The Lady Indians' passing errors on some aggressive serves by the Hoxie girls created a large point margin throughout the game. St. Francis fell behind 6-21 before a Hoxie 8-point run was stopped by a missed serve. Hannah Zimbal recorded a nice kill to move the score to 10-22, and Perla Yanez followed with an ace serve. St. Francis lost game two 12-25.

A good spike by Hannah Zimbal gave St. Francis a 2-1 lead in game three. Hoxie regained the lead (5-6), but another Zimbal kill gave the Lady Indians a 9-7 advantage. Hoxie committed a net violation on the next volley and followed with three hitting errors. St. Francis led 14-8 after an ace by Jayden McGinnis. St. Francis won the deciding game 15-10.

In the A team match, the Lady Indians had difficulty passing the aggressive serves from the Hoxie team. Inaccurate passing led to losses in both games of the set. St. Francis fell behind 1-8 early in game one. The margin grew to 3-12. Two kills by Lauren Johnson reduced the deficit to 7-13, and a Hoxie hitting error further trimmed the lead triggering a Hoxie time-out. Two additional Hoxie attack errors trimmed the margin to 11-13. Taighe Weeter's string of six consecutive service points ended on a well-placed Hoxie tip. Hoxie scored the next eight points to lead 11-23. The Hoxie run ended when the visiting Lady Indians misplayed an attack by Jessica Confer. St. Francis lost game one 14-25.

St. Francis tied game two at 2-all on an ace by Jessica Confer. Hoxie then won 9 of the next ten volleys to take a 3-11 lead. Lauren Johnson had a nice kill off an Taighe Weeter set to move the score to 6-15, but the Lady Indians just did not pass the ball well enough to generate offense and lost the game 14-25.

The St. Francis C team also lost a one game match later in the evening.

The junior high volleyball teams will play at Decatur Community, in Oberlin, on Thursday, October 16th.
