Lady Indians Defeat Quinter in Sub-State Action

The Class 1A - Division 1 Sub-State Volleyball Tournaments were played on Saturday, October 25. St. Francis competed in the Sub-State held in Stockton. The Lady Indians defeated Quinter in three sets in the opening match of the tournament and lost to Hoxie in the semi-final match. The volleyball season has now ended for the 2014 school year.

All three games with the Lady Bulldogs were close. Quinter won game one 21-25. St. Francis jumped out to a 3-0 lead receiving kills from Emily Elfers and Katie Schmid in early volleys. Qunter then reeled of six consecutive points to lead 3-6 triggering a St. Francis time-out. St. Francis narrowed the margin to 6-8 on a kill by McKenzie Taylor. A Quinter error on the next volley trimmed the deficit to one point, but then the Lady Indians committed a mis-communication error and an attack error to make the score 7-10. A set by McKenzie Taylor was hammered home by Katie Schmid to stop the Lady Bulldog run. The Lady Indians fell behind by four (8-12), but then scored three consecutive points. Two of the points came on swings by McKenzie Taylor, a kill and an ace (11-12).  Quinter won the next three volleys, and the teams traded points for a period of time. A Katie Schmid kill and a Sydney Sundstrom ace tied the game at 18-all. After a kill by Quinter's Simon, McKenzie Taylor won a joust at the net to tie the game at 19-all. A Lady Bulldog setting error was followed by a tip-kill by Taylor, and the Lady Indians had a 21-19 lead. Unfortunately, a series of five Lady Indian errors and a kill by the Lady Bulldogs gave Quinter a 21-25 win in game one.

St. Francis earned a 5-1 lead in game two aided by a Journey Lee ace and two kills by McKenzie Taylor. Quinter then scored five consecutive points, four of them coming on Lady Bulldog attacks. Quinter took a 6-8 lead when the Lady Indians did not make a play on a serve. An ace by McKenzie Taylor tied the game at 8-all. McKenzie followed with an off-speed kill and another ace for a 10-8 Lady Indian lead. After a Quinter time-out, a Lady Bulldog attack landed in the net giving St. Francid a three-point advantage (8-11). After kills by Emily Elfers and Kylie Sherlock, the margin grew to five (14-9). The margin remained between two and four points until late in the game. Five consecutive miscues by the Lady Indians allowed Quinter to tie the game at 21-all. After a St. Francis time-out, McKenzie Taylor recorded consecutive kills, one on a tip and one on a back-set by Kyla Bandel (23-21). A Bandel tip was mis-played by the Lady Bulldogs just before the final point came on an off-speed tip by Taylor. St. Francis won game two 25-21.
