Lady Indians Defeat Lady Buffs

Bandel Scores 30

The Lady Indians only trailed once in their contest against the Rawlins County Lady Buffaloes on January 27 in St. Francis. The Lady Buffs led 0-1, but Kyla Bandel's jumper in the lane, at 6:09, gave the Lady Indians the lead for good. Kyla followed with an offensive rebound score a bit later. Both teams had difficulty getting the ball in the basket early, and with nearly 6 minutes gone in the game, the score stood at 4-3. Bandel drained a trey at 1:09 and a couple free-throws moments later. St. Francis led 9-4 after one quarter of play.

St. Francis opened the second period with a basket in the post. Rawlins County (RC) trimmed the margin a bit with a post basket and free throw (11-7). An assist by Kyla Bandel setting up a score by Regan Beims was followed by a driving score by Bandel. At 4:36, the Lady Indians were up 15-7. Moments later, a Rawlins County trey narrowed the advantage to five points. After a St. Francis time-out, the Lady Indians began to press. The additional defensive pressure resulted in a couple of RC turnovers, and the Lady Indians used the extra possessions to increase their lead. Bandel scored three consecutive baskets in just over a minute to earn a 21-12 St. Francis lead. RC earned a driving score, their first basket in several minutes, but Zoe Sundstrom scored for the Lady Indians to keep the margin at 9 points. In the final 45 seconds of the first half, Rawlins County made a shot from the left corner and two free-throws to trim the deficit to 23-18.

Rawlins County scored a post basket and scored on their press offense in the opening minute of the second half to move the score to 23-22. St. Francis called time-out at 6:46 to regroup. After the time-out, Kyla Bandel scored 8 points (a basket and two treys) to give the Lady Indians a 31-22 lead at 5:12. The explosion resulted in a RC time-out at 5:02. Rawlins County worked the ball deliberately on offense, and the result was consecutive post baskets narrowing the lead to 31-26. At 2:54, the Lady Indians had another short scoring run. Reagan Beims scored in the post (assist Bandel) and Journey Lee made consecutive baskets (one from the right corner and one from the left wing) to extend the lead to eleven (37-26). A RC free-throw closed out the third period. St. Francis held a comfortable 37-26 lead.

The Lady Buffs scored on an offensive rebound on their first possession of the fourth quarter. The Lady Indians answered with three baskets in quick succession; a drive by Kayla Reed, a trey by Kyla Bandel, and a fast-break basket by Mariah Beikman (assist Zoe Sundstrom). The Lady Indians had increased their lead to 44-29. St. Francis earned two more baskets in the game; Madi Tice scored on a fast-break (assist Zoe Sundstrom) and Emileigh Dinkel nailed a shot from the right elbow.
