Jr. High Lady Indians Defeat Quinter

The junior high girls basketball teams hosted Quinter on Thursday, November 12, 2015. The Lady Indians earned a 36-15 win over the Lady Bulldogs in the A team contest. The Lady Indians used up-tempo offense and pressuring defense to earn the victory. Quinter won the B team game 13-20.

In A team action, Quinter lead throughout most of the first quarter after scoring first on an offensive rebound. St. Francis tied the game at 2-all on a shot from the right wing by Taighe Weeter after she gathered in a long rebound. The Lady Bulldogs earned the next two baskets from close range to lead 2-6. Emma Johnson moved the Lady Indians within one point with a trey from the right wing. With about a minute left in the period, Johnson's assist to Weeter on the break gave St. Francis a 7-6 lead.

St. Francis would not trail again. Taighe Weeter opened the second period with a shot from the right elbow (assist Emma Johnson). After a Quinter free-throw, Karly Bandel's assist to Weeter on the break gave the Lady Indians an 11-7 lead. The Indians used good defensive pressure to earn extra possessions and converted several of them to scores. The Lady Indians held Quinter scoreless for most of the period while receiving a basket from Cassidy Busse (assist Bandel), a right wing trey from Johnson, a coast-to-coast attack by Alondra Gomez ending in an assist to Weeter, and a Weeter steal-two. St. Francis led at halftime 20-7.

Quinter scored the first basket of the third period on press offense. It was the only basket of the quarter the Lady Bulldogs would earn. The Lady Indians earned three baskets; two out-of-bounds play buckets by Taighe Weeter (assists Emma Johnson and Sierra Robbins), and a coast-to-coast left-handed lay-up by Johnson. The Lady Indians extended their lead to 26-9 after three periods.

After an offensive rebound score by the Lady Bulldogs, Emma Johnson scored from near the top-of-the key. Johnson's assist set up another basket by Taighe Weeter on the right baseline moments later to move the score to 30-11. Quinter answered on an out-of-bounds play. Johnson then added a left wing trey and made one of two from the line. A nice pass by Jayden McGinnis led to the the last basket by the Lady Indians, a fast-break basket by Johnson. Quinter scored from the left elbow to make the final score 36-15.

Taighe Weeter scored 18 and Emma Johnson 16 for the Lady Indians. Cassidy Busse chipped in 2 points. Alondra Gomez had 7 steals in the contest, and Hannah Zimbal gathered 7 rebounds. Quinter was led in scoring by Abby Herl with points.

In B team action, St. Francis trailed 5-6 after one quarter and did not score again until the fourth period. Quinter led 5-12 at halftime and 5-17 after three periods. St. Francis scored 8 points in the final period, but could not recover from the early deficit. St. Francis lost to Quinter 13-20 in the B team game. Emma Johnson scored 9 points for the Lady Indians. Sierra Robbins and Audrey Meyer each added 2 points. Kayler Getz scored 7 for the Lady Bulldogs.

The junior high girls will play at Hoxie on Tuesday, November 17.
