Junior High Girls Sweep Wallace County

The junior high girls basketball teams both defeated their opponents from Wallace County on Monday, November 23, 2015. In games played in Sharon Springs, the Lady Indians earned a 25-12 victory in the B team game and won the A team contest 30-16.

In B team action, St. Francis earned an large early lead. Emma Johnson went coast-to-coast for the first basket of the contest. Johnson's assist set up a score by Cassidy Busse to move the score to 4-0. Johnson then scored the next five points (a left baseline jumper, a steal-two, and a free throw) to give the Lady Indians an 11-0 advantage early in the contest. Wallace County scored on an offensive rebound at the 2:12 mark to make the first quarter score 11-2.

Wallace County countered with a full court press in the second period and trimmed the lead to 11-10 with 2:30 left in the period. The Lady Wildcats offensive rebound score moments later gave the Lady Wildcats their first lead of the contest (11-12). The Lady Indians earned their only score of the period with approximately one minute to play in the half when Audrey Meyer scored on press offense. St. Francis led 13-12 at halftime.

Neither team scored in the third period. In the final period of play, Emma Johnson scored three quick baskets to open the period (offensive rebound, steal-two, and fast-break after a steal by Audrey Meyer). Cassidy Busse's offensive rebound basket gave St. Francis a 21-12 lead. Perla Yanez scored on a fast-break on an assist from Johnson. Johnson's steal-two made the final score 25-12.

Emma Johnson led all scorers with 15 points. Chaney led the Lady Wildcats with 6 points (all in the 2nd period). Cassidy Busse added 4 points to the Lady Indian point total. Others scoring for the Lady Indians were:  Sierra Robbins, Perla Yanez, and Christina Stafford, each with two points. St. Francis was 1 of 3 from the line.  Wallace County made 0 of 7.

The Lady Indians defeated a good Wallace County team 30-16 in A team action. The Lady Indians played very well throughout the contest utilizing aggressive defensive play to neutralize the offensive skills of the Lady Wildcats. Neither team had much luck scoring early in the contest. Jayden McGinnis scored the opening basket of the contest on an assist from Karly Bandel on an out-of-bounds play. After a Wallace County free throw, another Bandel assist led to a basket by Hanna Zimbal. St. Francis led 4-1 after one quarter or play.

Emma Johnson opened the second period with a jumper from the left wing (assist Hanna Zimbal). Karly Bandel's out-of-bounds play assist set up a score by Jayden McGinnis, and the Lady Indians earned an 8-1 lead. Wallace County made 1 of 2 from the line before McGinnis scored from the left wing on another Bandel assist. The remainder of the second period scoring was from the free-throw line. Alondra Gomez made 1 of 2 for the Lady Indians, and Wallace County also converted 1 of 2 late in the half. St. Francis had played well and held an 11-3 lead at halftime.

Taighe Weeter scored from the left elbow to open the third period. Alondra Gomez followed with an offensive rebound basket a few possessions later. Wallace County called time-out at 2:28 trailing 15-3. In the final minutes of the third period, St. Francis received a right wing trey from Emma Johnson (assist Weeter), a Weeter lay-up, and a steal-two by Johnson. Wallace County also earned a basket in the lane and an offensive rebound score. St. Francis led 22-7 after three periods.

Wallace County scored the first two baskets of the final quarter on a post-move and an offensive rebound. Emma Johnson made two-of-three free-throws after being fouled on another trey attempt (24-11). The Lady Wildcats then added a press-offense lay-up and another offensive rebound basket to trim the margin to 24-15. With three minutes left in the contest, Wallace County used another time-out. After the time-out, St. Francis received a left elbow jumper from Johnson and an offensive rebound basket from Taighe Weeter. Alondra Gomez's assist to Hannah Zimbal on a break accounted for the final St. Francis score. St. Francis defeated Wallace County 30-16 in a hard-fought battle.

Emma Johnson all scorers with 11 points. Taighe Weeter and Jayden McGinnis each added 6 points to the St. Francis side of the scoreboard. Hannah Zimbal chipped in 4 points; Alondra Gomez added 3. St. Francis made 3 of 5 from the line.

Perry and Medina each scored 5 points for the Lady Wildcats. Wallace County made 4 of 8 from the line during the game.

The Lady Indians will play Greeley County on Tuesday, December 1 in St. Francis.
