Jr. High Football Opens With Win
St. Francis 62; Quinter 28
The junior high football team defeated Quinter in the opening game of the 2016 season. The game was played on Greene Field in St. Francis on Thursday, September 1, 2016.
The teams played evenly until the last minute of the first period, when Adam Krien broke loose around the right side and ran 55 yards for the first St. Francis touchdown. Shadryon Blanka's pass to Kobe Tice was good for the extra points. On the ensuing kickoff, Quinter failed to field the kick, and Garin Cooper picked up the football at the 1-yard line and took it into the end zone for St. Francis. Blanka ran for the conversion. St. Francis led 16-0 after one quarter of play.
St. Francis scored twice more in the second period before Quinter was able to get on the scoreboard. Shadryon Blanka ran for a 26-yard touchdown around the right end early in the period. The conversion pass failed. On the next possession, Blanka scrambled for 33 yards to score again. The run for the conversion was stopped short, but the Indians led 28-0. Quinter earned their first score on a 40 yard run and added the conversion points, also by a run. On the ensuing kickoff, Adam Krien rambled 70 yards for a touchdown return. The conversion pass failed, but the score ballooned to 34-8. Late in the first half, Quinter scored again on a 2 yard run. The conversion run was unsuccessful moving the halftime score to 34-14.
St. Francis scored twice more in the third period. The scores came on a 23 yard pass play from Shadryn Blanka to Garin Cooper and a 7 yard run by Adam Krien. Blanka ran for the conversion after the second TD. St. Francis led 48-14 after three quarters.
Early in the final stanza, the Indians scored again. Shadryon Blanka scrambled 20 yards for another touchdown (conversion run failed). The Indians held a 54-14 lead. Quinter found the end zone twice in the fourth period scoring on a kickoff return (conversion run good) and ending a short drive with a dive play (conversion failed). The final score of the contest came on a 50 yard run by Adam Krien for the Indians. St. Francis won the contest, 62-28.
The young Indians will play Greeley County at home on September 8. The game will be played as a 6-man game (using 8-man rules).
