Lady Indians Breeze To Two Wins

The Lady Indians varsity volleyball team picked up two more wins on Tuesday, September 20, in Bethune, Colorado. The Lady Indians defeated Colorado Deaf and Blind 25-4, 25-4 in their first match of the evening. In their second match, the Lady Indians earned a 25-15, 25-14 victory over the home-standing Bethune Lady Bobcats.

The Colorado D & B Lady Bulldogs were no match for the Lady Indians. St. Francis jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead behind three aces by Karly Bandel who filled in nicely in the absence of Hanna Bracelin. After a series of missed serves by both teams, the Lady Bulldogs closed the margin to 6-3 before a kill by Lindsey Johnson and three aces by Lauren Johnson opened the margin to 10-3 and triggered a D & B time-out. After returning to the floor, Lauren reeled off seven more aces to increase the lead to 17-3. A D & B passing error and a deep tip by Lindsey added two more points to the Lady Indians side of the scoreboard before the run ended with a missed serve (19-4). The Lady Indians finished with a kill by Emileigh Dinkel and three aces by Taighe Weeter to take a 25-4 win in game one.

Game two was much the same. Karly Bandel opened the game with a service run of 10 points before missing a serve. The run included six aces and two kills by Jessica Confer. Four consecutive miscues by the Lady Indians closed the gap a bit before the next St. Francis scoring run. Madi Tice served out the game with a service run of 13 points. The run included 7 aces. St. Francis won game two 25-4.

The Bethune Lady Bobcats were a greater challenge, but could not muster enough consistency to stay with the Lady Indians' play. Bethune only earned one run of three points in game one, while the Lady Indians had five runs of three or more points. Bethune jumped out to an early 1-4 lead. The Lady Indians narrowed the gap to 4-5 on a stuff block by Lindsey Johnson before missing their second serve of the game. Katie Schmid's kill moved St. Francis within one (5-6), but the Lady Bobcats earned a three-point run on Lady Indian miscues (5-9). The Lady Indians answered with a five-point run featuring a kill by Jessica Confer and an ace by Madi Tice to regain the lead (10-9). Another SF missed serve tied the match at 11-all, but the Lady Bobcats committed four errors, and coupled with Karly Bandel's ace, the Lady Indians earned a 15-11 lead. Kills by Lauren Johnson and Confer, and an ace by Zoe Sundstrom, extended the lead to 18-12. The Lady Indians earned two more short runs to close game one. The game concluded on kills by Lindsey Johnson and Emileigh Dinkel (overpass kill). The Lady Indians won game one, 25-15.

In game two, Bethune again jumped out to a 0-4 lead before missing a serve. A six-point Lady Indian run gave the Lady Indians an 8-5 advantage. The run was triggered by an ace and kill by Zoe Sundstrom and a stuff and kill by Jessica Confer. Taighe Weeter's ace advanced the score to 12-8. Trailing by five at 19-14, the Lady Bobcats missed another serve. The Lady Indians capitalized with a five-point run to close the game, 25-14. Lauren Johnson served three aces during the closing run.

St. Francis will play Dundy County-Stratton and Chase County in Benkelman on Thursday, September 22.
