JH Girls Compete in Hoxie

On Saturday, September 24, the junior high girls volleyball team boarded the bus early and traveled to Hoxie for competition. During the day's competition, the Lady Indians played three opponents - Trego Community, Hoxie, and Decatur Community - losing all three matches in straight sets.

The Lady Indians played their best match of the day against a tall and talented team from Trego Community in their first match of the morning. St. Francis jumped out to an early 7-0 lead capitalizing on several good serves by Emma Johnson and two kills by Talexa Weeter. Trego then had a four-point run before missing a serve. The next four-point run placed the Lady Eagles ahead 10-12 before a tip-kill by Weeter ended the run. Katie Wurm's ace tied the match at 12-all. Another three-point run, including a block by Jesslynn Houtman and an ace by Ellee Krien gave the Lady Indians a 15-13 advantage. The lead soon disappeared, as the Lady Eagles answered with an eight-point run to take a 15-21 lead. During the run, Trego's Tillie Malinowsky had three kills. The run ended on a Trego hitting error. The margin grew to 16-23 after a jump-serve ace by Trego's Lili Shubert. St. Francis narrowed the margin to 19-23 before losing 19-25.

Game two was not as close. St. Francis led 6-5 after consecutive missed serves by Trego Community. After being tied at 7-all, Trego ran off ten unanswered points to led 7-17 before committing a hitting error to end the run. The only three-point run the Lady Indians had in the game came on a kill by Talexa Weeter and two miscues by Trego Community narrowing the gap to 12-20. St. Francis lost game two 14-25.

The second opponent of the day for the Lady Indians was Hoxie. Hoxie featured a talented team consisting of all 8th graders. St. Francis trailed 3-11 before scoring their only three-point run of the game to trim the deficit to 6-11. The run included two Hoxie hitting errors and an ace by Talexa Weeter. Hoxie followed with 7-point run including four consecutive aces by Reilly Pfannenstiel to lead 6-18. Another five-point Hoxie run closed game one at 8-25.

St. Francis took a 4-1 advantage in game two capitalizing on some good serves by Mia Morrow early in the contest. The Lady Indians would not score more than two-consecutive points in the rest of the contest. Hoxie put together runs of 7, 3, and 4 points to lead 9-18 before a free-ball kill by Talexa Weeteer stopped the final run. Emma Johnson followed with an ace serve. The Lady Indians trimmed the lead to 13-20 before missing a serve. Hoxie went on to win game two 16-25.

The Lady Indians did not execute as well against the Decatur Community (DC) Lady Red Devils as they had earlier in the day. In game one, Strong serves by Mia Morrow helped the Lady Indians jump out to a 7-1 lead with a 5-point run before a missed serve stopped the momentum. DC tied the match at 8-all before a free-ball kill by Mireya Palasio-Rocha stopped the Red Devils. Four consecutive Lady Indian miscues allowed the Lady Devils to take a 9-12 lead. Hanging tough, the Lady Indians tied the game at 12-all on a stuff block by Emma Johnson. Unfortunately, the Lady Red Devils answered with a seven-point run (including four aces). St. Francis lost game one 17-25.

St. Francis did not score three consecutive points in game two. The Lady Devils had three runs of 10 (to lead 2-11), 6 (to lead 4-19), and three to win easily, 10-25.

In B-Team action, St. Francis lost to Trego Community 9-25 26-28 and to Hoxie 15-25, 17-25. The B-Team girls earned a win in their last match of the day against Decatur Community 25-23, 25-23.
