JH VB Teams Lose to DC

On Thursday, October 13, the junior high volleyball team traveled to Oberlin for three matches. Decatur Community (DC) won all three matches against the Lady Indians. The Lady Indians gave good effort, but their execution was not sharp enough to win any of the matches played.

B-Team

In B-team action, the Lady Indians got off to very poor start falling behind the Lady Red Devils 1-13. A DC missed served stopped the run. A three-point St. Francis run, initiated by consistent serves by Rian Zimbal, moved the score to 6-16. Decatur Community stretched the advantage to 7-21 before their next run was stopped by an attack by McKenna Poling. A five-point St. Francis run, beginning with an ace by Poling, moved St. Francis back within ten (14-24) before the Lady Indians lost 14-25.

Set two was close throughout, with the largest lead being 6 points. Capitalizing on hits by Rian Zimbal and Lydia Jenkins, the Lady Indians led 3-1. A four-point DC run eventually tied the match at 5-all. Some consistent serves by Amy Jenkins led to a four-point St. Francis rally, and the Lady Indians led 11-7 triggering a DC time-out. After returning to the floor, the Lady Devils scored 8 consecutive points to take an 11-15 lead. The Lady Devils increased their lead to six (12-18) and held the advantage until 15-21. St. Francis trimmed the deficit to three (20-23) on kills by Amy Jenkins and Rian Zimbal, but lost 20-25.

A-Team

The first set of the A-Team match was closely contested. The largest lead of the set was the final deciding margin of five points, 20-25. St. Francis earned a 5-2 lead capitalizing on an ace by Emma Johnson, a kill by Jordan Faulkender, and an ace by Mia Morrow before a missed serve stopped the Lady Indians' run. The advantage became four (7-3) after a kill by Kattie Wurm and an ace by Faulkender. DC then earned two three-point runs to take an 8-9 lead. The second run was the result of some aggressive serves by DC's Melody Koerperich. A four-point run by the Lady Indians, including a missed serve by DC, a Faulkender kill, a Morrow kill, and a Johnson stuff moved the Lady Indians back in front 13-10. St. Francis' third missed serve of the match halted the momentum. The missed serves, eventually took their toll with the sixth missed serve of the set by the Lady Indians, triggering a four-point DC run that relinquished the led back to the Lady Devils (18-20). Some strong serves by DC's Gracie Vontz and Kaitlyn Howland sealed the Red Devil win, 20-25.

St. Francis jumped out to a 6-2 lead after a kill by Emma Johnson, two aces by Mia Morrow, and DC hitting error resulted in a five-point run. A missed serve stopped the momentum, but soon another small run ending with a Johnson kill and an ace by Talexa Weeter extended the lead to 11-5. Again, the run ended with a missed serve. DC's Gracie Vontz served nine consecutive points; most coming on the Lady Indians inability to pass her aggressive serves. A DC passing error stopped the run, but the Lady Devils soon earned another run of five points initiated by serves from Kaitlyn Howland. St. Francis could not keep pace and lost game two 14-25.

C-Team

St. Francis lost the C-Team match, consisting of only one set, 11-25. St. Francis fell behind 2-8 early, but trimmed the deficit to 4-8 on an ace by Lyden Lampe. A Lampe kill moved the score to 6-12, but the Lady Devils gradually extended their lead to 9-21 before winning the contest 11-25.

The junior high girls will compete in the NWKL Junior High Volleyball Tournament on Tuesday, October 18. The A-Team tournament will be held in Sharon Springs. The B-Team tournament will be held in Hoxie.
