Going Out With a Bang

Digging up the ball is Saint Francis Junior Madison Tice in the game against Brewster. The Lady Indians won both games against Brewster and Sharon Springs on Senior NightThe Lady Indians played two extremely exciting games against the visiting Triplains-Brewster Titans and the Sharon Springs Wildcats. The ladies played very impressive games, winning both. The final scores against Brewster were 25-15 and 25-17. The scores for Sharon Springs were 25-19 and 25-16.
In the Brewster game, both matches started with a huge Indian lead. The Titans caught the Lady Indians off guard for a short moment to close their losing gap, but the Indians showed them who’s boss and finished both matches with an impressive leading score.
The Sharon Springs game consisted of long volleys and back and forth leading score at the beginning. The Indians soon took control of the game and finished it with a win over a competitive team.
“[The most exciting part was] having two wins in one night,” said Lauren Johnson, Saint Francis sophomore.
Both games were very exciting and full of a lot of energy. Saint Francis Junior and Captain Madison Tice played in both games as the libero. The libero is a defensive specialist that is only allowed to play the back row.
Tice said, “I think the most exciting part would be just all around winning for our seniors because it was their last home game and it’s good to go out with a big bang for them.”
It was Senior Night and two of the team members were recognized: Katie Schmid and Nicole Bonsignore. Bonsignore is one of our foreign exchange students that joined SFCHS for her senior year. Schmid has been playing volleyball since her junior high days.
Sarah Raile, Saint Francis head varsity volleyball coach, said she was honored to coach both of the seniors.
“Katie [Schmid] is a leader on and off the court,” Raile said. “A lot of coaches would be honored to have such a wonderful leader and athlete be apart of their team. Katie is an aggressive hitter and a great server. I think the hardest thing for me saying goodbye to Katie is knowing we are losing a great leader both on and off the court as well as an aggressive talented outside hitter. She will be missed greatly by her teammates as well as coaching staff and managers.”
Raile said it was her first year coaching a foreign exchange student on the team and that was an honor for her.
“Nicole [Bonsignore] is a wonderful teammate and a huge part of our family,” said Raile. “Nicole worked hard at practice and got better each day. The hardest thing for me to say goodbye to Nicole is even though she was only here for a year it still felt like she had been here all four years and is apart of our family. She worked hard all season giving our girls competition every practice. She will be missed by her teammates, coaches as well as managers.”
Schmid said she felt honored to be recognized at Senior Night.
“I think the best part was being honored and having to make the point of the last match for both games. I think it was a great year and am excited to go out with a big bang,” Schmid said.
Seeing the seniors grow in their play of volleyball throughout the years has been worthwhile. Seeing where they go next … is something many look forward to.
