Jenna Confer: Behind the Homecoming Queen

Jenna Confer, who was born and raised in Saint Francis, Kan., is a senior this year at Saint Francis Community High School

Confer is an accomplished student with great grades, and has made it to the KMEA, Kansas Music Education Association, which is a very high honor for a student to receive. Confer said she has enjoyed every year of high school but her favorite year was her junior year. It was her favorite year because she met many personal goals, one included making it to the KMEA. She also served as co-captain for the pom squad and got to teach her very first dance down at The Dance Ranch. “These leadership roles helped me to step out of my comfort zone and definitely challenge myself, but of course, I loved every minute of it,” said Confer.

She said one of her most memorable times occurred during the week of the Young Miss pageant. She said it was very memorable and the community gave her so much support.

Confer ended up being the only girl in her class who tried out for pom or cheer. She was nervous her freshmen year being the only girl in her class to do it, but the older girls were very nice to her and she has loved it ever since. Confer said she is also the only person in her class who doesn’t like today's country, pop, or rap music. She prefers show tunes from Broadway musicals or songs that have a meaning and purpose to their lyrics.

After graduating from SFCHS, Confer would like to attend Fort Hays State University majoring in Elementary Education and minoring in music performance. Fort Hays is currently where one of Confer’s good friends attends college, Sydney Sundstrom. Sundstrom said she misses Jenna “lots” and can’t wait to be more in touch with her next year.

Confer’s all-time favorite teacher was Mrs. Fiala. “She helped me so much throughout the years and has went above and beyond to prepare me for auditions and contests,” said Confer. “She makes learning the really hard pieces not such a hassle.”

Jenna’s younger sister, Jessica Confer said the thing that annoys her about her sister the most is her constantly bursting out into songs.

Jenna said that she is really going to miss all the support given through our community when she leaves for college. Confer also said SFCHS has provided her with many leadership roles throughout the years that have made her into the person she is today.

When looking back on her senior year so far, Jenna’s favorite part has been getting to have such a big role in homecoming week. “As a football cheer captain, it was so much fun getting to plan the week's festivities,” said Confer.

After reflecting on her high school experience, Confer wanted to advise underclassmen to get the most out of their high school experience they need to get involved. “Be as involved as possible. We are so lucky to get to grow up in a small community where we are allowed to try any class or activity we want. Please take advantage of it! So many students don’t have that opportunity at other schools. I guarantee it will make your high school experience a thousand times better,” said Confer. “Second, your future is unlimited. Dream the dream and don’t stop until you have achieved it. And lastly, don’t lose sight of who you are. Be you and don’t change for anyone.”
