JH Lady Indians Split With Cheylin

St. Francis and Cheylin split their season-opening basketball games in McDonald on Monday, October 31. St. Francis won the B-Team game 16-12. Cheylin won the A-Team contest 20-27.

B-Team

Lyden Lampe scored the first basket of the 2016 season, a shot from the left wing, to open the B-Team game. Cheyin's Brooke Porubsky answered from the left elbow, but another Lampe score from the left elbow gave St. Francis a 4-2 lead after one quarter of action.

Only one basket was scored in the second period; a left wing shot by Piper Hamilton for the Lady Cougars. The teams were tied at halftime, 4-4.

As the teams began to relax and execute better, the scoring pace also picked up. Vivan Yanez gave the Lady Cougars their first lead of the game with a score from the right baseline. Rian Zimbal soon answered with a lay-up basket. After a baseline score by Cheylin, McKenna Poling scored on a steal-two and an offensive rebound. The second Poling basket, with 21 seconds left in the 3rd period, gave St. Francis a 10-8 lead.

With 4:23 remaining in the game, Jordyn Faulkender scored a stick-back basket giving the Lady Indians a 12-8 advantage and triggering a Cheylin time-out. Nellie Hespe scored from the right post moments later for the Lady Cougars. A right wing basket by Hadleigh Hilt gave St. Francis a 14-10 advantage late in the final period. Cheylin then responded with a free-throw line jumper pulling within 14-12 with 43 seconds remaining. After a St. Francis time-out, The Lady Indians scored on an out-of-bounds play basket by Faulkender to win 16-12.

A-Team

The A-Team Lady Indians suffered through a poor-shooting evening and never led in the A-Team game. A turnover-two gave Cheylin the first basket of the contest. An assist by Emma Johnson set up a fast-break basket by Talexa Weeter tying the contest. Cheylin's Gabriela Gutierrez's out-of-bounds play basket from the free-throw line put Cheylin back in front. Ellee Krien scored on a fast-break basket (assist Johnson) late in the period making the score 4-4 after one period of play.

Cheylin increased their led to 4-7 making a free-throw and scoring from the right wing. Jordyn Faulkender converted 1 of 2 free-throws, but Cheylin netted consecutive free-throws extending the lead to four points (5-9). Faulkender's rebound basket at 1:34 pulled St. Francis within two (7-9) where the score stood at halftime.

Cheylin's Alondra Perez scored on a drive to open the 3rd period. Talexa Weeter answered for the Lady Indians. A driving basket by the Lady Cougars widened the margin back to four points (9-13). St. Francis took a time-out to re-group with 2:48 on the clock. Emma Johnson's assist led to a Weeter baseline basket, but Gutierrez scored again for the Lady Cougars. Johnson's offensive rebound basket again moved the Lady Indians within two (13-15), but a free-throw and offensive rebound by Soledad Bermudez extended the gap to 13-18. A steal-two by Johnson trimmed the margin to 15-18 by the third period break.

Talexa Weeter's free-throw and basket from the right corner kept the Lady Indians close. With 3:33 remaining, St. Francis trailed 18-20. After the Lady Indians failed to score, a run-out basket by the Lady Cougars gave Cheylin an 18-22 lead. Again at 2:20, a 5-second violation gave the ball back to St. Francis.
