Jr. High Girls Split With Wallace Co.

The junior high girls split their basketball games with Wallace County on Thursday, November 3, 2016. The A-Team girls defeated Wallace County (WC) 21-16. The B-Team girls lost a very close contest 18-20. The games were played in Sharon Springs.

In A-Team action, the Lady Indians earned an early lead but Wallace County continued to battle and narrowed the margin in the second half. St. Francis earned a 4-0 lead on an offensive rebound basket by Kattie Wurm and two free-throws by Emma Johnson.  After Breanna Medina scored for the Lady Wildcats, Jordyn Faulkender added a free-throw. Two assists by Johnson on the fast-break, one to Talexa Weeter and one to Jesslynn Houtman, increased the lead to 9-2. Medina scored again at the buzzer to make the first quarter score 9-4.

Wallace County scored the first basket of the second period on an offensive rebound, but it would be the only score for the Lady Wildcats until after halftime. St. Francis added a free throw by Emma Johnson and then two fast-break baskets by Talexa Weeter (assists Johnson) to extended the lead to 14-6 with 2:28 remaining in the first half. After a St. Francis time-out, Wallace County was penalized for having six players on the floor, and Johnson added another free-throw. The final score of the period came on a nice post-move by Jordyn Faulkender after an assist by Mia Morrow. St. Francis led 17-6 at halftime.

Wallace County scored the only two baskets of the 3rd period. The scores narrowed the margin to 17-10 at the third quarter break.

Victoria Springsteel's driving basket early in the final period further narrowed the advantage. Emma Johnson scored consecutive baskets for the Lady Indians (offensive rebound and baseline drive) to move the scoreboard to 21-12. Medina's right wing shot made the score 21-14 with 2:06 remaining. A fast-break basket at 1:33 narrowed the gap to 21-16. Moments later, a foul by the Lady Indians on a three-point attempt, gave WC hope. The Lady Wildcats missed all three attempts. St. Francis held on for a 21-16 win.

The Lady Indians will play Greeley County, in St. Francis, on Tuesday, November 8.
