JH Girls Earn Two Wins In Tribune

The junior high girls basketball teams won both of the contests played against Greeley County on Tuesday, November 29 in Tribune. The A-Team girls doubled the score on the Lady Jackrabbits winning 42-21. The B-Team defeated Greeley County (GC) by a much closer score of 18-14.

St. Francis trailed 0-4 after one quarter of play in the B-Team game, but earned 14 points in the second period to lead 14-4 at halftime. Though the Lady Indians did not score in the third period, they still held a 14-9 advantage after three quarters of play. The Lady Indians held on for an 18-14 victory. 

Scoring in the B-Team contest were:  Hadleigh Hilt 5, Amanda Neitzel 4, Miah Hackney 3, Lydia Jenkins 2, Ellee Krien 2, and Mia Morrow 2. Greeley County was led by Grace Whitham with 6 and Jaci Nixon with 5. Neither team shot well from the free-throw line as St. Francis made 2 of 10 and GC connected on 2 of 12.

Emma Johnson opened the A-Team contest with driving basket, but GC quickly answered with a turnover-two. McKenna Poling's steal-two gave the Lady Indians another brief lead, but a banking left-wing shot by Aly Chanez tied the game again. The Lady Indians took the lead for good on an offensive rebound basket by Johnson (6-4). A Johnson assist to Talexa Weeter added a fast-break score. Jordyn Faulkender's free-throw preceded a steal-two by Johnson. Weeter's steal and left-handed lay-up advanced the margin to 13-4. In the final moments of the first period, Greeley County scored a basket on a break to make the score 13-6 after one period.

The Lady Indians gradually extended the lead in the second period while using most of their players during the action. McKenna Poling opened the scoring with a offensive rebound basket. Jesslynn Houtman earned the next basket on an out-of-bounds play. The Lady Jackrabbits added a couple of free-throws, but they were soon answered by free-throws by Poling and Emma Johnson (2) bringing the score to 20-8. After a score on press-offense by GC, Talexa Weeter added a free-throw and a basket from the lane on a Houtman assist. The Lady Indians led 23-10 at halftime.

Raelynn Welsh scored the opening basket of the second half for Greeley County on an offensive rebound. It would be the only basket for the Lady Jackrabbits until late in the period. The Lady Indians reeled off 10 unanswered points to lead 33-12. The scores came on a drive by Talexa Weeter, a stick-back by Emma Johnson, a baseline drive by Kattie Wurm, a shot in the lane by Johnson, and a bucket by Mia Morrow. In the closing moments of the period, Welsh scored again from the lane. Johnson's driving score completed the quarter. St. Francis led 35-14.

An assortment of players saw action in the final period for the Lady Indians. All played well. St. Francis extended the lead to 39-14 on a left-wing shot by Talexa Weeter (assist Emma Johnson) and out-of-bounds play score by Jordyn Faulkender (assist Ellee Krien). Johnson and Weeter each added free-throws to help bring the final tally to St. Francis 42, Greeley County 21.

Greeley County had two players, Brianna Hill and Kyra Nolan, score 6 points each to lead the Lady Jackrabbits. Emma Johnson (15) and Talex Weeter (13) led the Lady Indians in scoring. Other Lady Indians scoring in the contest were:  KcKenna Poling 5, Jordyn Faulkender 3, Jesslynn Houtman 2, Kattie Wurm 2, and Mia Morrow 2.

The Lady Indians will play Dighton, in St. Francis, on Thursday, December 1st.
