Junior High Girls Defeat Hoxie

The junior high girls basketball teams both defeated Hoxie on Tuesday, November 7, in St. Francis. The A-team won their contest 21-14 and the B-team held on for an exciting 22-20 win at the Grade School. The C-team girls played two quarters of basketball losing 10-12.

In A-team action, both teams struggled to find the basket early, but Hoxie opened the scoring midway through the first period on a post basket by Hailee Scheetz. Ellee Krien answered with a steal-two moments later. The addition of two free-throws by Hoxie's Hayley Jacobs and a right-wing jumper by Krien moved the score to 4-4 at the first period break.

St. Francis earned three consecutive baskets to open the second period to take a 10-4 lead. The score came on an offensive rebound by Jordan Faulkender, a baseline shot by Lyden Lample, and post basket by McKenna Poling (assist Lampe). After a post basket by Jacobs, Poling scored on a drive, and Talexa Weeter added a basket from the left wing to increase the margin to 14-6. The half ended with the score St. Francis 16 - Hoxie 8 after the addition of a driving score by Haley Heskett for Hoxie and basket in the lane by Mia Morrow (assist Krien).

Neither team scored much in the third period. St. Francis added free-throws by McKenna Poling and Jordan Faulkender and Hoxie scored two baskets. The Lady Indians led 18-12 after three quarters of action.

The scoring drought continued in the early portion of the final period, and Hoxie took a time-out at 3:42 with the score remaining 18-12. Shortly thereafter, an assist from Jesslynn Houtman to Lyden Lampe on a break moved the scoreboard to 20-12. At 2:34, St. Francis called time-out and returned to the floor to add a free-throw by Rian Zimbal. Hoxie then added a score by Willow Washington on a out-of-bounds play lob. Neither team scored in the final two minutes of the contest. St. Francis defeated Hoxie 21-14.

Hayley Jacobs led Hoxie in scoring with 6 points. St. Francis received balanced scoring from a number of players. Scoring for St. Francis were:  McKenna Poling 5, Lyden Lampe 4, Ellee Krien 4, Jordan Faulkender 3, Mia Morrow 2, Talexa Weeter 2, and Rian Zimbal 1.

St. Francis will play Wallace County, in St. Francis, on Thursday, November 9. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
