Blake Utsler: Living the Dream

If you want to hear a heavy and chunky riff and have some fun, Senior Blake Utsler is the guy for you. Utsler’s uncle James Bussell II and the lead guitarist of Pantera Dimebag Darrell inspired his decision to pick up the guitar. “I like to play my guitar and jam out to Pantera in my free time,” said Utsler. At an early age, Blake discovered he had come from a musical family and figured out a new direction in his music choice. “One day I looked up a documentary on Pantera and that’s when it really punched me in the gut. The heaviness and groove of the band was enough to get me hooked,” said Utsler.

Utsler lives on a farm in the country with an arrangement of multiple animals. “I like to mow the the lawn when I’m on the farm,” said Utsler. In his free time from farming he likes to play the guitar and jam out to the metal band Pantera.

If you have a ghost problem in Saint Francis, who are you going to call? You could call Utsler who likes to hunt ghosts in his spare time. Utsler said he’s bummed he hasn’t caught anything on footage, “but we did catch EVPs [electronic voice phenomena] and very direct responses to our questions.” Utsler said he would like to get better gear to try and receive more evidence.

At school when Utsler is not thinking about his guitar, he is focused on his favorite subject, Algebra II because he likes the challenge. Utsler is not a huge fan of his English class. He doesn’t like the same thing and same subject occurring everyday in, but he enjoys all of his other classes. Sophomore Jaron Berig said they met when they were just babies and have been friends ever since. “I consider him as a brother.” said Berig. Berig said Utsler makes him proud, and he wishes Utsler good luck in his future.

Utsler plans to go into the Air Force after graduating high school and go into the medical field for Radiology or a Special Operations field including TRF (Tactical Response Forces). “I think that I would be making my family and hometown proud by joining the military,” said Utsler. “My family was always hard working, so I would like to continue the tradition.”

Sophomore Seth Hilt said Utsler is a funny guy. “I wish him luck and think the military is an admirable career choice,” Hilt said.
