Indians Come out Swinging

The Saint Francis Lady Indian volleyball team had a busy week with four well-skilled teams.

On Tuesday, September 18, 2018, the Indians went up against the Bethune Bobcats and the Weskan Coyotes. First, the Indians played Bethune. The Indians got out to a slow start but worked their way up to win both sets, 25-16, 25-14.

“I was the libero tracker on Tuesday. A lot of the girls had a chance to play their first varsity game on Tuesday. Our girls were very respectful and kind about them not being as good and struggling. They didn’t rub it in their face or make them feel worse. Sometimes in those kind of games you play down to their level but our girls still played a good game and played hard,” said Cassidy Busse, junior.

Then, the last matchup of the day against the Coyotes. The Indians have already seen this team twice already and beat them both times in two sets. The Coyotes came off swinging and made it an exciting game, luckily the Indians defeated them with a score of 25-16, 27-29, 25-23

“It was a slower paced game. We just got off to a strong start and that allowed some of the other players to get more playing time which is good and it was fun to watch them succeed,” said Karly Bandel, junior.

Thursday, September 20, 2018, the Lady Indians played well but lost both varsity volleyball matches against Imperial and Benkelman. St. Francis was defeated by Imperial 17-25, 21-25 and Benkelman 21-25,15-25.

“Nebraska teams are always good. I love playing those types of teams because all they do is make us better,” said Sophomore Emma Johnson.

The Lady Indians record is now 15-4. The Indians will take on the Lady Cougars and the Oberlin Red Devils next Tuesday.

It was also Senior Night the for Lady Indians. Lauren Johnson, Lindsey Johnson, and Jessica Confer all got recognized for contributing their time and effort with the volleyball team for four years.

“It was a sad night for all three of us. It was crazy that was our last time getting to play on our home court with all my teammates. I will truly miss our home court advantage and all our fans cheering us on,” said Senior Lauren Johnson.
