Saint Francis FFA Food Science CDE
On November 15th the Saint Francis FFA Food Science Team did very well in Russell, Kansas. It was the second Career Development Event (CDE) for the chapter. The contest had five parts all focused on food science and the food industry. The contestants performed a triangle test where they evaluated three different kinds of chocolate chip, crackers, and pop to see which one was different. There were then five different aromas you had to smell and identify. Another table had safety violations and participants had to figure out what the safety issue was and how to correct it. Finally, there were two written tests. The first was a 50 question test about rules and violations in cooking and the food industry. After that, there was a math practicum that required participants to answer questions including converting liquid measurements and how many calories there are in yogurt.
There was only two Greenhands (first year members) that participated. Hadleigh Hilt placed 1st and Caleb Todd placed 23rd out of 83 total Greenhands from 13 schools. The senior team placed 6th overall and was lead by Echoe Lennox who placed 5th. Mason Schmid placed 7th, Kattie Wurm placed 67th, and Marlo Jensen placed 124th out of 137 participants from 16 schools. The next CDE on the schedule for the chapter will be Vet Science on November 27th at Colby.
