Junior High Boys Split Games With Cheylin
On Tuesday, November 27, the junior high boys basketball teams split their contests with the Cheylin Cougars. St. Francis won the A-team contest 34-23. Cheylin won the B-team contest 19-24. Cheylin also won a two-quarter C-team game.
In the C-team contest, Cheylin led 0-4 after one period and cruised to a 0-8 win in the abbreviated match-up. Cheylin had four players score one basket each in the game.
In the B-team game, St. Francis earned only one basket in the first period, a shot by Dawson Rose. Cheylin led 2-5 after one period of play. In the second period, the Indians received two buckets by Rose, one by Shane Todd and Connor Wachsmann, and a free-throw by Wachmann to lead 11-9 at intermission.
St. Francis extended their lead to 15-9 holding the Cougars scoreless in the third period. In the final period, Cheylin earned three baskets each by Pablo Bermudez and Brady Ketzner as well as three points from Harley McPherson to earn a come-from-behind victory 19-24.
St. Francis was led in scoring by Dawson Rose with 8 points. Connor Wachsmann added 7, Aiden Fernandez 2, and Shane Todd 2. The Indians made 3 of 10 from the stripe. Cheylin was led by Brady Ketzner with 8 points. Pable Bermudez added 6 and Harley McPherson 5. The Cougars made 2 of 6 from the line.
In A-team action, the Indians earned a 12-point advantage after one period of play, 16-4. The Indians received scoring from Ben Busse, Preston Witzel, Colton Raile, and Chris Espino during the first quarter. The action was much closer in the second stanza with Espino scoring all of the Indians points during the period (4). Cheylin added two to their side of the scoreboard on a bucket by Tucker Burr. The Indians led at halftime 20-6.
Colton Raile accounted for most of the Indians' scoring in the third period, getting 8 points on plays around the basket. The Indians stretched the margin to 32-15. Preston Witzel scored the only basket the Indians would make in the final period. Cheylin trimmed the margin a bit getting 8 points in the quarter. St. Francis defeated Cheylin 34-23 in the A-team contest.
Colton Raile led the Indians in scoring with 11 points. Preston Witzel added 9, Chris Espino 8, and Ben Busse 6. Cheylin was led by John Serrano with 9 and Pablo Bermudez with 8. Tucker Burr chipped in 4 and Brady Ketzner 2. Both teams made 1 of 6 from the line.
The Indians will play Rawlins County, in Atwood, on Thursday, November 29.
