DCS Girls Defeat Lady Indians

JV Lady Indians Earn Narrow Win

The 7-0 Dundy County Lady Tigers played well and earned a varsity win over the Lady Indians on Friday, December 14, in St. Francis. The talented visitors jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 16-58 victory over St. Francis. The junior varsity Lady Indians earned a 15-14 win in an abbreviated two-quarter contest.

The evening began with the junior varsity contest. After an initial score off the opening tip by the Lady Tigers' Taryn Burrell (Jr.), McKenna Poling sank consecutive free-throws to tie the game at 2-all. Midway through the first period, Dundy County - Stratton (DCS) earned back-to-field goals to take a slim 5-6 lead. Near the two-minute mark, an assist from Emma Johnson led to a right-wing basket by Karly Bandel returning the lead back to the Lady Indians (7-6). Johnson's two free-throws moments later stretched the lead to three. Mia Morrow sank a jumper from the right elbow late in the period to give St. Francis their largest lead of the game, 11-6, at the first-quarter break.

The only points scored in the first three minutes of the second quarter were a pair of free-throws added by DCS. After a SF time-out at 5:12, the Lady Indians received an offensive rebound basket by Jordyn Faulkender. Moments later, Grace Powell (So.) banked a trey in for DCS from the right-wing. The Lady Tigers then added a pair of free-throws to trim the margin to 13-12. St. Francis used another time-out with 1:34 remaining. In the final minute, Faulkender scored in the lane giving the Lady Indians a 15-12 advantage. The Lady Tigers answered with 15 seconds remaining on a shot from Angle Pfannenstiel (Jr.). and took a quick time-out to preserve the clock. The Lady Tigers committed a foul with 8 seconds left, but the free-throws were missed. DCS recovered the rebound, but could not get a shot off before the clock expired. St. Francis won the two-quarter JV game, 15-14.

The Lady Tigers jumped all over the Lady Indians early in the varsity contest. Senior Adalene Krutsinger scored on the opening tip. Lindsey Johnson answered with a jumper from the right-wing. An assist from Krutsinger led to a score by Sable Lambley (Jr.) in the lane. Lauren Johnsons' left-wing trey gave St. Francis their final lead of the contest (5-4). DCS followed with a 0-17 run to blow the game open. In the run, McKinzie Baney (So.) added a floater in the lane and two free-throws, Jessie Freeland (Jr.) scored from the left-wing, and Baney added an offensive rebound score on the third offensive rebound of the possession. St. Francis took a time-out at 1:57 trailing 5-13. After returning to action, Lindsey Johnson picked up her second foul attempting to defend the Lady Tigers' Grace Fredrick in the post. Fredrick added a post-basket (plus one). Maggie Lutz (So.) added a right-wing jumper in the final seconds of the quarter. St. Francis trailed 5-18 at the first-quarter break.

The DCS run continued into the second period. Lutz added a left-baseline jumper and Frederick a free-throw before the Lady Indians scored again on a left corner trey by Emma Johnson (8-21). Baney then chipped in a deuce before Krutsinger scored four baskets from close range (three on post moves and one on a break). Baney tossed in a left-corner trey and Grace Fredrick added two post-move buckets. The Lady Tigers' size and skill was more than the Lady Indians could counter. The only other basket the Lady Indians would earn was on a shot by Hannah Zimbal. St. Francis trailed 10-37 at halftime.

Grace Frederick opened the third period with another post basket. Hannah Zimbal followed with a free-throw. The Lady Tigers' dominance inside would continue as Krutsinger and Fredrick each added more baskets (Krutsinger 3, Fredrick 1) as play continued. The margin increased to 11-48 before the Lady Indians added two free-throws by Karly Bandel. After the second SF time-out of the period (2:04) Bandel added an additional free-throw making the score 14-52. Jordyn Faulkender followed with an offensive rebound score for the only SF basket of the quarter. In the final minutes of the quarter, DCS received scores from substitute players Kaylin Brown (So.) on a offensive rebound, and Sydney Reichert (Jr.) in the lane. The Lady Indians trailed 16-56 at the third quarter break.

The final period was played with a running clock. Only one basket was scored; a right-baseline shot by DCS's Angel Pfannenstiel (Jr.). The DCS Lady Tigers dominated the Lady Indians 16-58.

Adalene Krutsinger led all scorers with 17 points. Maggie Baney added 14 and Grace Fredrick 10 to the Lady Tiger's cause. Nine different Lady Tigers scored in the contest totaling 25 field goals. The Lady Tigers made 6 of 12 from the stripe and committed 12 turnovers and 13 fouls.

St. Francis totaled 5 field goals as a team. Scoring for St. Francis were Emma Johnson, Lauren Johnson, Karly Bandel, and Hanna Zimbal each with 3 points. Lindsey Johnson and Jordyn Faulkender each added two points. The Lady Indians made  4 of 13 from the stripe and had 19 turnovers and 13 fouls.

The Lady Indians will play Idalia, Colorado, at home on Friday, January 4.
