Lady Indians Thump The Lady Bulldogs

Though the game was marred by numerous turnovers (51 total), the varsity girls game between the Lady Indians and the Quinter Lady Bulldogs was played with great effort by both teams. The Lady Indians earned a 56-28 win in the game played on Saturday, January 26. The game was postponed to January 26 due to poor weather conditions on November 30. The junior varsity Lady Indians were defeated in a two-quarter contest 15-26.

In varsity action, Emma Johnson opened the scoring with a stick-back basket. Quinter's Kayler Getz (5' 9" So.) answered from the post on the next Quinter possession. An assist from Emma set up a left-wing trey by by sister Lauren Johnson. It did not take long for Quinter tie the contest a 4-all on an out-of-bounds play basket by Andrea Charles (5' 7" Sr.). At 5:29, Quinter called time-out to make some adjustments. After a free-throw by Lindsey Johnson, Quinter's Evie Gruenbacher (5' 5" Sr.) drained at right-corner trey giving the Lady Bulldogs their first lead of the contest. St. Francis called time-out at 2:50, and soon after, Lauren Johnson scored on a steal-two. It would be one of 16 turnovers the Lady Bulldogs would have in the first half. At 1:59, Quinter used their second time-out. After returning to action, Gruenbacher earned a lay-up on a St. Francis turnover. The Lady Indians would have 10 turnovers by halftime. The play gave Quinter a 7-9 advantage, but the Lady Dawgs would not lead again. Hannah Zimbal sank two free-throws to tie the contest, and in the closing seconds of the quarter, Lindsey Johnson scored on an offensive rebound. St. Francis led 11-9 at the first quarter break.

Twenty-one seconds into the second quarter, St. Francis used their 2nd time-out. The Lady Indians then added two free-throws by Karly Bandel and a press-offense basket by Lindsey Johnson (assist Emma Johnson).  Trailing 15-9 at t 6:21, Quinter used a time-out; their 3rd of the contest. After returning to action, Kayler Getz earned a pair of free-throws for the Lady Bulldogs. Lauren Johnson followed with a top-of-the-key trey and Mia Morrow added another trey a bit later. The Lady Indians now led by double digits (21-11). With 1:52 left in the first half, Hannah Zimbal picked up her 3rd foul and went to the bench. After two free-throws by Evie Gruenbacher, Jordan Faulkender added an out-of-bounds play basket on an assist by Karly Bandel. Bandel drained at top-of-the-key trey to close the half. St. Francis led 26-13 at halftime.

Kayler Getz earned a turnover-two for the Lady Bulldogs to open the third period. Lauren Johnson's assist set up a free-throw line jumper for Karly Bandel. Bandel then added a right-corner trey (plus one) to move the scoreboard to 32-15. On the next Quinter possession, Lindsey Johnson drew a charge on a driving Lady Bulldog. It was the 4th foul on Andrea Charles. Quinter scored the next two baskets; a lay-up by Gruenbacher and basket by Ava Gillespie (5' 3" Fr.). Jordyn Faulkender drilled back-to-back free-throws that were answered by a right-wing trey from Gillespie. Another Faulkender free-throw preceded the 3rd St. Francis time-out at 1:27. The foul also gave Quinters' Getz her fourth foul. St. Francis closed the quarter with a basket in the lane by Faulkender and a top-of-the-key buzzer-beater by Bandel (assist Lindsey Johnson). St. Francis led 40-22 at the third quarter break.

Gruenbacher's free-throw began the 4th-quarter scoring. With 6:24 left in the contest, Quinter used their 4th time-out. Andrea Charles added a baseline score after on offensive rebound. Lauren Johnson followed with two free-throws for St. Francis. Hannah Zimbal then earned two free-throws after she was fouled on a drive after a Quinter turnover. Zimbal followed with a score in the lane. At 3:22, Zimbal fouled out of the contest. St. Francis used their 4th time-out at 3:14. Shortly after a return to action, Karly Bandel added a basket from the right-elbow giving St. Francis a twenty-three point lead (48-25). Gruenbacher then scored on a break-out lay-up for the Lady Dawgs. St. Francis followed with a top-of-the-key trey by Bandel and free-throws by Emma Johnson and Bandel. Jordyn Faulkender accounted for the final basket scored by the Lady Indians. St. Francis defeated Quinter 56-28.

Karly Bandel led the Lady Indians in scoring with 19 points. Lauren Johnson and Jordyn Faulkender each had 9. Others scoring for St. Francis were Hannah Zimbal 6, Lindsey Johnson 5, Emma Johnson 3, and Mia Morrow 3. The Lady Indians connected on 16 of 21 from the line (76%), had 18 fouls, and committed 20 turnovers.

Quinter was led by Evie Gruenbacher with 12 points. Kayler Getz added 6. The Lady Bulldogs had 31 turnovers, 18 fouls, and made 5 of 11 from the free-throw line.

The Lady Indians will play Holyoke, Colorado, in Holyoke on Tuesday, January 29. The Lady Dragons currently have a season record of 6-6.
