Girls Lose At Holyoke

Twelve point run seals win for Dragons

The Holyoke Lady Dragons defeated the St. Francis Lady Indians in both contests played in Holyoke on Tuesday January 30. The evening opened with the two-quarter junior varsity contest. Holyoke earned a 12-28 victory in the JV game. In varsity action, St. Francis lost to Holyoke 35-52.

In varsity action, Holyoke struck first. Kaylee Camblin (5' 9" Sr.) drained a baseline shot to open the scoring. Karly Bandel followed with a basket from the block. The Lady Dragon's Emily Jelden swished a top-of-the-key trey moments later. The Lady Dragons were moving the ball crisply versus the Lady Indians' zone defense. A pair of free-throws by Hannah Zimbal and a right-wing trey by Emma Johnson placed the Lady Indians in front 7-5. The lead was short-lived as Jelden drained another trey; this one from the right-corner. A steal-two by Taeryn Trumper (5' 7" Jr.) and a score on a break by Kristin Vieselmeyer (6' 0" Fr.) triggered a time-out by St. Francis at 2:15. After returning to action, Zimbal scored on press-offense. Zimbal then sandwiched an out-of-bounds play basket (assist Bandel) between a baseline score and free-throw by Vieselmeyer. It was obvious the action was going to be brisk. The Lady Indians trailed 11-15 after one quarter of play.

Vieselmeyer scored the first basket of the second period when she was left uncovered under the goal on an out-of-bounds play. Zimbal followed with a driving score. Emma Johnson then earned a steal, passed to Karly Bandel, who returned the ball to Johnson for a lay-up. The play moved the Lady Indians within two (15-17). The Lady Indians then fouled Tareyn Trumper on the three-point shot; Trumper made two-of-three. A nice baseline drive by Bandel was followed by another pair of Trumper charity tosses. On the missed second free-throw, Holyoke grabbed the rebound and Vieselmeyer scored from the free-throw area. The action moved the deficit to five (17-22). Emma Johnson scored on a back-door cut on an assist from Bandel, and moments later, Jordan Faulkender drew a charge on Emily Jelden in the lane. Jelden left the court with 2 fouls. Emma Johnson's right-wing trey (assist Lindsey Johnson) tied the game at 22-all. Unfortunately, Vieselmeyer tossed in a last-second buzzer-beater trey from near half-court. Holyoke led 22-25 at halftime.

In the opening moments of the second half, Emma Johnson tossed in another trey from the left-wing tying the contest. Holyoke's Victoria Race (5' 8" Jr.) swished a deep top-of-the-key deuce to retake the lead. An offensive rebound basket by Emily Jelden was followed by a left-wing trey by Lauren Johnson (28-29). Hannah Zimbal followed Kaylee Camblin's baseline jumper with a free-throw. At 2:17, St. Francis used their second time-out trailing 29-31. The Lady Dragons were about to make a move. After a Lady Indian turnover, Vieselmeyer scored in the post. Karly Bandel answered with a top-of-the-key trey (32-33). It's as close as the Lady Indians would get. In the closing moments of the third period, Vieselmeyer scored on a sweet baseline reverse lay-up and a post-move. Lauren Herman (5' 10" Fr.) added a jumper in the lane after another Lady Indian turnover. St. Francis trailed 32-39 after three quarters of action.

The Holyoke run would continue. The Lady Dragons scored the first three baskets of the final period to complete a 0-12 run. Taeryn Trumper added a driving score and a jumper in the lane. Vieselmeyer added a lay-up after another Lady Indian turnover. St. Francis called time-out to slow the momentum trailing 32-45 at 6:35. The outcome had been decided. With Holyoke's excellent guard play, it was going to be difficult to recover. At 4:25, Lindsey Johnson scored on an offensive rebound. The Lady Indians used their fourth time-out at 4:07. With Holyoke playing "keep-away" the Lady Indians were now scrambling to regain possession of the basketball. After a free-throw by Savannah Burris (5' 7" Sr.), Holyoke used their 3rd time-out at 2:35. Vieselmeyer would add a press offense basket, Camblin chipped in an offensive rebound score, and Herman added a final basket. A free-throw by Bandel was the only point the Lady Indians would earn in the final minutes. St. Francis lost to Holyoke 35-52.

Kristin Vieselmeyer led the Lady Dragons in scoring with 22 points. Taeryn Trumper added 9 and Emily Jelden 8. The Lady Dragons made 5 of 13 from the line, committed 11 fouls, and had 10 turnovers.

The Lady Indians made 4 of 8 from the stripe, had 22 turnovers and 17 fouls. Emma Johnson led the St. Francis scoring with 13 points. Hannah Zimbal added 9 and Karly Bandel 8. Others scoring for the Lady Indians were Lauren Johnson with 3 and Lindsey Johnson with 2.

In junior varsity action, Holyoke jumped all over the Lady Indians defensively with good physical full-court pressure. The Lady Indians had difficulty with the quickness and aggressiveness of the Lady Dragons and committed several early turnovers (11 in the first quarter; 15 total). The open possessions translated to extra opportunities for the Lady Dragons and the home-standing Dragons jumped out to an large early lead. Holyoke's Victoria Race (5' 8" Jr.) scored the first two baskets of the contest from close range. After a St. Francis time-out at 6:16, Race scored from the post again. With the addition of two baskets each by Lauren Herman (5' 10" Fr.) and Shianne Willmon (5' 8" Jr.) the Dragons led 0-14. Many of the scores came after Lady Indian turnovers. At 2:38, St. Francis used their second time-out. In the final minutes of the first period the Lady Dragons added a right-wing deuce increasing the margin to 0-16. With 3.3 seconds left in the period, St. Francis finally got on the scoreboard receiving two free-throws from Hannah Zimbal.

Holyoke extended their lead in the second period. Willmon added a free-throw and baseline basket, and Emali Torres (5' 9" So.) scored on an offensive rebound. The margin grew to 2-21. Emma Johnson drained a trey from the left wing for the first St. Francis field goal of the game. Jordyn Faulkender chipped in a free-throw. After a press-offense basket by Torres, Bailey Workman added a free-throw. Holyoke took a time-out with 2:27 remaining. Hannah Zimbal added two more free-throws with just over 2 minutes left. After a St. Francis time-out at 2:09, Holyoke added a score in the lane (plus one) and a left-wing deuce. Lyden Lampe swished a top-of-the-key trey in the closing moments after an assist from Faulkender. St. Francis lost to Holyoke in the JV girls contest, 12-28.

The Lady Indians will play Hoxie, in Hoxie, on Friday, February 1.
