Junior High Girls Lose to Hoxie

The junior high girls basketball teams hosted Hoxie in St. Francis on Tuesday, November 12. The young Lady Indians hustled hard, but were defeated in both games played by the taller and more experienced players from Hoxie. St. Francis lost the A-Team girls game by a score of 6-52. The B-Team girls were defeated 4-54.

The junior high teams will host Wallace County in St. Francis on Thursday, November 14. Games will tip-off at 4:00 p.m. in both the St. Francis High School and Grade School Gymnasiums.

The junior high girls struggled against a much taller and experienced team from Hoxie. The size differential helped cause numerous turnovers and offensive rebounds leading to additional shots for the visitors. Hoxie earned the first three points of the contest receiving a stick-back basket from Ella Zerr (8th) and a free-throw from Sofie Gourley (7th). Maggie Hingst tied the contest near the 3-minute mark of the first period on a top-of-the-key trey on an assist by Kiera Penka. In less than a minute, the margin grew to 3-9; the result of several SF turnovers. Baskets by Josey Kennedy (8th), Mireya Villa (8th), Londyn Schiltz (7th), and Jaidyn Follis (7th) increased the deficit to 3-16 at the first quarter break.

Hoxie retracted their full-court pressure in the second period, but the turnovers and point margin continued to increase. Baskets by Kennedy (two), Zerr, Schiltz (two), and Kailyn Follis (7th) advanced the margin to 3-29 in the first part of the second period. Late in the second, Maggie Hingst connected on another top-of-the-key trey to move the scoreboard to 6-29. A final basket by Emily Bainter (7th) completed the first half scoring. St. Francis trailed 6-31 at halftime.

Hoxie increased the margin to 6-46 on a right-wing trey by Bainter with 3:04 remaining in the 3rd period. Their would be no more scoring in the period from either team. Though eleven different players had played for Hoxie in the first three periods and more would enter in the final period, the Lady Indians did not score in the second half. The fourth quarter was played with a running clock due to the 30-point rule. St. Francis lost to a good Hoxie team 6-52.
