Journalism Students Sweep Kansas State Press Association Regional Placements

Kansas State Press Association regional results are in and Saint Francis Community High School swept regional placements. Seniors Karly Bandel, Cassidy Busse and Audrey Meyer all placed in all three categories they competed in. Busse earned first place in all three categories she competed in: sports writing, editorial writing and sports photography. “I am so excited that I qualified for state especially with it being my last year,” Busse said. “Going to state is like a reward for working so hard all year!” Bandel placed first in yearbook copy writing, second in news page design, and third place in cutline writing. “It’s really exciting to qualify in all three events I participated in and I’m really hoping to place my senior,” Bandel said. Meyer, who has qualified for state since her freshman year, placed first in feature writing, third in infographics and honorable mention in news writing. “I really love to compete because this competition is unlike any other,” Meyer said. “Plus, I get to spend time with some of my closest friends on the trip to Lawrence.” Seniors Italia Gutierrez and Yaneiri Quezada also qualified to go to state. Quezada placed first in yearbook layout.  “Honestly I feel proud of myself because I didn’t have much time to do it and it turned out really good,” Quezada said. Gutierrez placed honorable mention in infographics. “I am really excited to qualify for state because I’ve never made it to state and it feels good to know people think your hard work is worth a lot,” Gutierrez said.

Juniors Adam Krien, Emma LaLond, Colton Neitzel, and Josiah Sims also qualified for state. Krien placed first in yearbook sports writing, second in feature writing and honorable mention in advertising.  “I’m proud that I made it in three different categories,” Krien said. “I’ve worked really hard the last couple years and it’s paid off.” LaLond placed second in yearbook sports writing and third in sports photography. “I was really kind of surprised because you texted me and I was like are you serious. I was proud of myself. It’s going to be a busy weekend,” LaLond said. Neitzel placed third in yearbook layout. “It felt really good to qualify because I wasn’t expecting to make it as far as I did and it’s cool to see my work pay off,” Neitzel said. Sims placed third in headline writing and design.

Sophomores Hadleigh Hilt and McKenna Poling placed in two categories each. Hilt placed third in copy editing and third in editorial writing.  “I’m excited to go because it’s always such a fun time with my friends and you learn so much,” Hilt said. Poling placed second in advertising and honorable mention in editorial cartoon.  “When I first found out I made it to state I was ecstatic. I remembered going last year and had so much fun,” Poling said.  Sophomore Kara Maybury placed first in news page design. “It’s very exciting,” Maybury said. “I definitely did not think I would place at all.”

Three freshmen placed at regionals and are going to state: Bree De Waal, Rian Zimbal and Ellee Krien. Zimbal placed first in copy editing and first in student life photography. “I was a little surprised at first but I’m really happy about it,” Zimbal said. “It’s cool.” De Waal placed first in photo illustration. “It’s a big accomplishment and I’m really proud and I’m excited to see where I go at state,” De Waal said. ”Ellee Krien placed honorable mention in photo illustration. “It’s a true blessing; I feel very proud and accomplished,” Ellee Krien said.
