Junior High Track Teams Compete in Oakley

FIVE New School Records Set

The junior high track teams were in action in Oakley, Kansas, on Thursday, April 26th.  The meet was competed in four divisions with athletes from five schools participating:  Grant Junior High (Goodland), Hoxie, Oakley, Scott City, and St. Francis.

Five new St. Francis school records were set in the meet in Oakley.  Lane Hobrock established two new 8th grade school records. Lane triple jumped 36' 11 1/2" to surpass the record held by Gabe Smull of 35' 0"  set in 2002.  Lane also nipped the 200 meter hurdle record set earlier this year by Garrett Brunk.  Lane ran 30.00 seconds.  Garrett's old record was 30.13.

Joel Hill (photo unavailable) set a new 7th grade record in the triple jump. Joel's leap of 32' 4" bettered Joel McAtee's record set in 2002 of 31' 6 1/4".

Taylor
Taylor Rogers ran 30.80 in the 200 meter hurdles to better is own record set earlier in the year of 32.37 seconds.

McKenzie
McKenzie Taylor also set a 200 meter hurdle record by running 30.90 seconds.  McKenzie's sister, McKayla, was the previous record holder at 33.09 set in 2011.

"We are blessed with some good athletes that don't mind working hard to get better.  I've coached a long time, but I certainly can't remember setting five new school records in one meet.  The kids had a great day against some very good competition," stated Coach Kent Kechter.

The St. Francis 7th grade boys placed fourth scoring 50 points.  Scott City won the 7th grade boys division with 125 points.  Goodland was second with 71 points, and Oakley third with 65.  Hoxie placed 5th with 18 points.  The Indians also lost sprinter J.R. Landenberger early in the meet and for the remainder of the season due to an hip injury he suffered in the 4 X 100 meter relay.

Athletes scoring in the 7th grade boys division for St. Francis are listed below.

J.R. Landenberger:  1st 100 meters 12.62

Joel Hill:  1st triple jump 32' 4"  (NEW 7TH GRADE SCHOOL RECORD); 2nd long jump 15' 3 1/2"; 5th 800 meters 2:40.90

Quinton Cravens:  3rd 100 meter hurdles 17.74; 3rd triple jump 30' 8"

Taylor Rogers:  1st high jump 4' 8"; 2nd 200 meter hurdles 30.80 (NEW 7TH GRADE SCHOOL RECORD); 3rd pole vault 7' 0"

Ryan Grover:  5th shot put 28' 3 1/2"

 

The Indian 8th grade boys placed third with 73 points.  Scott scored 118.5 points to win the 8th boys division.  Goodland was second with 102 points.  Hoxie (35) placed fourth and Oakley (25.5) fifth.

Carl Fabre:  2nd 100 meters 12.15; 2nd long jump 17' 3 1/2"; 3rd 200 meters 25.55

Lane Hobrock:  1st triple jump 36' 11 1/2" (NEW 8TH GRADE SCHOOL RECORD); 3rd 200 meter hurdles 30.00 (NEW 8TH GRADE SCHOOL RECORD); 4th 100 meters 12.56

Chris Hoard:  2nd shot put 35' 3 1/2"; 2nd discus 99' 3 1/2"; 4th 1600 meters 6:26.62

Garrett Brunk:  2nd pole vault 9' 0"; 3rd 100 meter hurdles 16.52; 5th 200 meter hurdles 30.23

Francisco Fernandez:  5th high jump 4' 10"

Clay Cassaw:  5th pole vault 7' 6"

Jude Faulkender:  3rd shot put 33' 5 1/2"; 3rd discus 87' 10"

4 X 100 meter relay:  (Francisco Fernandez, Travis Rogers, Justin Pacheco, Phillip White) 4th 55.60

4 X 200 meter relay:  (Jakob Church, Justin Pacheco, Chris Hoard, Phillip White)  4th 2:03.46

4 X 400 meter relay:  (Garrett Brunk, Clay Cassaw, Francisco Fernandez, Lane Hobrock) 3rd 4:24.11

The 8th grade girls placed third in the their division scoring 64 points.  Goodland won the 8th grade girls division narrowly defeating Scott City 109 -101.  Hoxie placed 4th with 25 points and Oakley fifth with 23.

Eighth grade girls scoring in the meet are listed below.

McKenzie Taylor:  1st 100 meters 13.18; 1st 100 meter hurdles 16.87; 1st 200 meter hurdles 30.90 (NEW 8TH GRADE SCHOOL RECORD)

CarolEve Harris:  3rd 200 meters 28.74; 4th 100 meters 14.11

Sidney Sundstrom:  4th 3200 meters 22:20.62; 4th shot put 28' 4 1/4"

Emily Elfers:  3rd 100 meter hurdles 18.24; 5th 200 meter hurdles 35.27

Journey Lee:  2nd pole vault 6' 0"

Kylie Sherlock:  2nd triple jump 26' 4"

Kayla Reed:  5th 22' 7 1/2"

4 X 100 meter relay:  (CarolEve Harris, Emily Elfers, Kylie Sherlock, McKenzie Taylor) 2nd 57.28

4 X 200 meter relay:  (Journey Lee, Kayla Reed, CarolEve Harris, Kylie Sherlock) 4th 2:11.69

4 X 400 meter relay:  (Emily Elfers, Journey Lee, Kayla Reed, Hannah Wolff) 3rd 5:22.20

The 7th grade girls scored 4 points to finish 5th in the meet.  Goodland won the 7th grade girls division with 107 points.  Scott City placed second with 94, Hoxie third with 75, and Oakley fourth with 53 points.

Girls scoring in the 7th grade division are listed below.

Katie Schmid:  5th 100 meters 14.79; 5th 100 meter hurdles 19.23

4 X 100 relay:  (Danielle Frink, McKayla Rogers, Katie Schmid, Sophie White) 4th 1:05.11

The Indians will compete in St. Francis on Thursday, May 3rd.
