Lady Indians Defeat Weskan & Cheylin

The Lady Indians added two more wins to their season record on Tuesday, September 10. The Lady Indians opened the evening with a 25-9, 25-8 win over the Weskan Lady Coyotes and then added a 25-16, 25-21 win over the Cheylin Lady Cougars. The matches were played in the St. Francis High School Gymnasium.

Mia Morrow opened the Weskan match with a strong kill, but an attack error by the Lady Indians soon evened the score. St. Francis then compiled a four-point run to lead 5-1. In the run, Karly Bandel serveD two aces, before missing her third serve. Two kills by Emma Johnson and a Weskan passing error moved the score to 8-2. Weskan then scored the first of two 3-point runs they would earn in the entire match (one in each set). The run came on three Lady Indian miscues, but was ended by a kill by Jesslynn Houtman. After another service error by the Lady Indians, a 6-point SF run advanced the margin to 15-6. The action included two kills by Hannah Zimbal, a kill by Rian Zimbal, two kills by Jordyn Faulkender, and ace by Emma Johnson. After a Weskan time-out, junior Blakely Aldridge earned the first of only two kills the Lady Coyotes would earn in set one. Another three-point run resulting from a kill by Hannah Zimbal and two aces by Kattie Wurm moved the margin to 18-7. Aldridge followed with her second kill. St. Francis then reeled off 8 consecutive points to close the set; winning 25-8. This run featured two aces by Morrow, a kill and dump-set by Faulkender, two aces by Hannah Zimbal, and a net violation on the final point of the set by the Lady Coyotes.

Game two was very similar. St. Francis controlled the action from the outset. Weskan earned but one kill in set two. Hannah Zimbal opened the set with an ace serve. A kill by Jordyn Faulkender moved the score to 4-0. After an over-pass tip by Weskan sophomore Ari Okeson, St. Francis earned three more consecutive points, getting one on a Kill by Zimbal and one on an ace by Karly Bandel. Jesslynn Houtman's tip moved the margin to 7-1, but the Lady Indians ended their run with a service error. Mia Morrow then hammered a powerful spike returning momentum to St. Francis. Though the Lady Coyotes picked up a couple points on SF miscues, a Morrow kill, a dump-set by Bandel, and a block by Emma Johnson helped widen the margin to 10 points (14-4). Following three SF attack errors, a kill and two aces by Johnson kick-started the next SF run extending the lead to 19-7. St. Francis finished the set with a 6-point run that included two kills by Zimbal and a tip by Faulkender. The Lady Indians won game two and the set 25-8.

Cheylin defeated Weskan in two sets in the second match of the evening. The Lady Indians and Lady Cougars paired up in match three. Cheylin earned an early lead on a SF attack error and an ace by senior Kaylynn Hendricks. Though the Lady Cougars used a time-out attempting to change momentum, St. Francis scored the next 11 points. During the action, Jordyn Faulkender earned a kill, Hannah Zimbal served two aces, and Mia Morrow scored on a tip. An over-set kill by sophomore Grace Wright ended the run. Cheylin's next point came on a missed serve by the Lady Indians, one of 7 by SF in the match. Another 3-point run featuring a first-ball-over-kill by Karly Bandel and an ace by Alondra Gomez gave SF an 18-7 lead. Cheylin then earned their only run of the set (3 points) on SF miscues moving the score to 20-11. After a kill by Zimbal, Hendricks earned another nice kill for the Lady Cougars. Two kills by senior Grace Sabatka helped narrow the advantage to 23-15. Ending two of the last three volleys were SF kills; one by Johnson and one by Morrow from the back row. St. Francis won set one 25-16.

Hannah Zimbal scored on a no-play ace to open the second set. A stuff-block by junior Soledad Bermudez gave Cheylin their first lead (1-2) since the first two points of set one. Another missed serve by the Lady Indians tied the game at 3-all, but was followed by two Lady Indian kills; one by Emma Johnson and one by Rian Zimbal. On over-pass tip by Bermudez allowed Cheylin to regain the lead at 6-7. A stuff-block by Kaylynn Hendricks earned the Lady Cougars an 8-9 advantage. A kill by junior Alondra Perez retained the lead for Cheylin, but then the Cougars missed their second serve retying the contest. The set would be tied 11 times before a winner was determined. Karly Bandel's off-the-net ace established an two-point SF advantage (12-10). Bandel's next ace increased the margin to 3 points, but was answered by a kill by Grace Sabatka. Leading 13-12, St. Francis called time-out, but soon, a 4-point Cheylin run placed the Lady Indians at a two-point deficit (14-16). It took kills by Emma Johnson, Rian Zimbal, Hannah Zimbal, and three by Mia Morrow to help move the score to 20-20. Cheylin then called time-out and returned to the floor to take a one-point lead on a SF attack error. The Lady Indians then scored 5 straight points to win 25-20. During the finalizing run, Hannah Zimbal earned a kill, Morrow served two aces, and Bandel and Rian Zimbal each scored on tips.

In junior varsity action at the Grade School, St. Francis lost to Weskan in three close sets 25-23; 24-26; 8-15. There was no JV match between Cheylin and St. Francis.
