Letter to Parents and Students concerning the wearing of masks

Parents and Students,

After much consideration and thoughtful discussion, having taken into account the viewpoints of county health, the building principals, and the superintendent of schools, the board of education voted at the regularly scheduled board meeting held on August 13 to highly recommend masks, but not to require masks in schools. All other Covid-19 mitigation protocols, such as daily temperature checks for staff and students, hand washing, using hand sanitizer, disinfecting surfaces in classrooms, and social distancing as recommended by KSDE will be left in place. This vote was contingent upon a favorable outcome at the Cheyenne County commissioner meeting on August 14 and was made possible by the recent opinion of Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt published in the media.

There are special circumstances in which mask-wearing will be mandated. Children will still be mandated to wear masks in elementary music class and players, fans, and workers will wear masks at all indoor NWKL events.

All students, staff, and visitors who wish to wear masks are more than welcomed to do so throughout the normal school day.

The school is committed to vigilantly monitoring the Covid-19 situation and will be in close contact with the Cheyenne County Health Department and other decision-makers to determine what actions to take should circumstances change in Cheyenne County.
