Defending 1A state champions win regionals, advance to state

Saint Francis journalism students didn’t let their size (being the smallest yearbook staff in recent years) slow them down at regionals. The defending state champions won the Bison 1A/2A regionals and all staffers are advancing to state. Saint Francis received a combined 34 points to secure their win over Satana, which scored 21. Ellis High School, Hill City High School and Central Plains High School also competed in the 1A/2A Bison regionals. 

Ben Busse, 10, placed third in editorial writing. 

Bree De Waal, 10, placed first in news page design, first in sports photography and honorable mention in cutline writing. 

Jordyn Faulkender, 11, placed second in feature writing, third in sports writing, third in advertising and third in yearbook theme and graphics. 

Andrea Graham, 9, placed second in infographic design and third in yearbook design. 

Hadleigh Hilt, 11, placed first in A Winter in the Heartland photography competition which paid the winner cash. She also placed third in yearbook copywriting, third in yearbook theme and graphics, and fourth in copy editing. 

“It’s great to be able to show off our talents,” Hilt said. “It was also such a fun time to bond with the staff. I always look forward to contests because I feel like it helps us to be better.”

Adam Krien, 12, received third in feature writing, honorable mention in sports writing, fourth in student life photography and honorable mention in headline writing. 

Ellee Krien, 10, received first in yearbook sports writing, second in news writing, second in yearbook theme and graphics, third in digital illustration, and fourth in sports photography.

“We always usually make it pretty far in sports but it’s a great honor to get recognized for academics in state journalism,” Ellee Krien said. 

Anitzia Mayorquin, 11, placed second in news page design, fourth in cutline writing, third in headline writing, and  honorable mention in sports photography.

McKenna Poling, 11, received first place in advertising design,third in news writing, fourth in editorial writing, and fourth in editorial cartoon.

Rian Zimbal, 10, placed second in yearbook copywriting, second in student life photography, second in yearbook design, second in yearbook theme and graphics, and third in copy editing. 

“It was fun to make it to state and place as high as I did in my contests,” said Zimbal. “It’s such an honor to make it to state in all of my categories.”
