Lady Indians Perform Well in Round Robin Tournament

A good crowd attended the first St. Francis Round Robin Tournament on Saturday, October 11th, in the high school gym.  Fans viewed some very close competition between the four teams involved--Cheylin; Hayes Center, NE; Hitchcock County, NE; and St. Francis.  Hitchcock County won the tournament defeating all three of the other teams.

Action began at 9:00 am with the Lady Indians playing against the Lady Cardinals from Hayes Center.  St. Francis played very well winning in two sets 25-14, 25-20.  Aly Marin served very well in the match recording 23 of 24 and serving 21 points.  Elizabeth Gienger and Aubree Schlepp each had 5 kills and the front line recorded 12 blocks.  Hitchcock County then defeated Cheylin in two sets.

In the third match of the day, St. Francis defeated Cheylin 25-7; 25-15. Gienger was 14-14 serving and Jami Pevler had 8 kills.  Hitchcock County then defeated Hayes Center in two games.  Hayes Center defeated Cheylin in three close games to place third in the tournament.

Hitchcock County (15-4) brought a tall, skilled, and experienced team to St. Francis. The Lady Indians played well throughout most of the match, but missed 12 serves in the championship match to open the door for a Hitchcock County win.  Jamie Pevler (10 kills), Gienger (7 kills), Kaitlin Figgins (7 kills) lead the St. Francis attack.  Aly Marin had 21 assists and the Lady Indians front line had 17 block/stuffs.  Scores in the championship match were 26-28; 25-23; 18-25.

Next week the Lady Indians will be traveling to Winona to compete against the Triplains Vikings and Wallace County Lady Wildcats on Tuesday.  The Northwest Kansas League Tournament will be held in Colby on Saturday, October 18th.

In junior varsity action on Saturday, St. Francis split their two matches with Hitchcock County. As the scores indicate the competition was very close.  St. Francis lost the first match 20-25; 25-8; 14-16 and won the second match 25-21, 26-24.
